Description This is taken north of Kailua Kona on the Big Island of Hawaii. I really love the interesting lava rock formations of the island. It's like watching a constant fight between the land and sea. The sea eventually wins but the land holds its own for thousands of years. Now that's drama!

This was a interesting hike out to this location. It's not very far from the sandy beach which is like 400 yards behind me and to the north but it's very broken and rough lava rock. The tide was low or it would not have been possible to get out this far. It was wet, slippery and footing was very tricky and difficult. I almost slipped a few times and then when I got out there, in my zeal, I set up a bit to close and was almost knocked into a huge tide pool when a wave nailed me about knee high. There was spray all over my filters as well so I had to keep dabbing that off to.

As soon as I got set up in my new spot I was ready to wait for a great sunset. That's when this scene presented itself. I thought a faster shutter would work better but wanted to get a little movement so I hit the shutter right as a nice wave hit the rocks in front of me for the first exposure.

This is actually 2 images put together in CS2. I use a Cokin P series filter set and with my wide angle lens I can only hold 1 filter at a time at 10mm. The light difference from the rocks and the sky was about a good 12+ stops. The strongest ND grad I had was 4 stops. I took 2 shots. the first I used the 4 stop nd grad over the water and used a spot meter off the rocks. The 2nd shot was spot metered from the blue sky. I then used Photoshop and put them each on a layer and used a heavy feathered mask to make the single exposure. Add in some other adj layers and presto.

Hope you enjoy. Comments welcome!

I have no idea what youre saying in your last paragraph, but this is an awesome picture. Sorry im a camera noob

Basically what I'm saying is I used a tripod and took 2 pictures of the same scene. In the first I adjusted the camera to take a picture of the foreground. The 2nd was to take a picture of the sky. I then blended them in the computer.

I could not just take 1 picture because if I adjusted the camera for the foreground rocks the sky was just all white (to much light). If I adjusted it to make the sky look like it did when I was taking the picture the rocks were so black you could not see them at all.

Normally what I would do is use what's called a ND filter (neutral density filter). It's a square glass or plastic filter that you put in a holder. The holder hangs off the front of the lens. A ND filter is colored on only half the filter so you position it over the brighter areas of a scene. This allows you to block down the light a bit and get an even picture.

They come in different strengths (the darker it is the more light it blocks). even with a 4 stop (a very dark one) I could not block out enough light from the sky to get the rocks to look right. I needed to use 2 filters but my setup only lets me use one so I took 2 pictures instead.

Your probably even more confused now. PM me if you want a better explanation.

No thats a good explanation, I think im going to try get into a little more advanced photography. Thanks!

This is my favourite of the two, the faster speed works better, and there is gorgeous light here.
It's nicely composed and the sky is great.

I reckon it's time to invest in bigger filters. Most digital cameras have a range of 5-6 stops of exposure in any given scene, then an additional couple of filters would have given you the range to shoot this in one take.

Lovely work though. Nice shot

Ya, I really hate having to stitch it. those Lee Z filters look sweet. Thanks for the comments, always appreciated!

The great thing about the Cokin Z series is that they also fit Lee filters. Cokin ZPro are nice, and all my soft grads are Cokin, but Cokin don't make hard grads, which are a lot more useful for water scapes (and also feel stronger somehow). The Lee filters I've bought are really impressive. Thicker, stronger and more resiliant, as well as better optically.
I'm happy with a mix of both. And the Cokin holder is great. You can use 3 filters at 10mm, or 2 filters with the ND400 screwed in

wafox In reply to AndyMumford [2007-06-26 11:28:56 +0000 UTC]

You can hold 2 with the ND400 on at 10mm? thats sweet. I'm sold! ....... I just looked up the cost of the Lee filters. Holy... Which ones does the Z holder filt? The 4x4, 4x6 or 6x6?

AndyMumford In reply to wafox [2007-06-26 12:12:31 +0000 UTC]

Oh goodness...you Americans with your feet and inches....can't you get with the rest of the world

Cokin ZPro are 100mm wide (perhaps the 6 inch ones) and so you want the Lee 100mm filters...the grads are all about 130mm long...but it's only the width that matters. Cokin ZPro will fit all 100mm wide filters in the holder.

Hey I'd love to. Feet, inches and miles are about as silly as it gets. The site I was looking at only lists them in inches but now I know 100mm wide. perfect!
