Description The south end (looking north) of Kiholo Bay at Twilight.

The entire area north of where I took this image was once a gigantic freshwater/brackish fishpond. There are fresh water springs that dump into the ocean here so it creates a incredible lagoon with very clear freshwater on top and salt water under.

It was built by Kamehameha the Great in 1810 after his first pond was destroyed by the 1801 Hualalai lava flow. This new pond was mostly filled in 1859 after a lava flow from Mauna Loa breached the southern walls. This created the lagoon that's here now. It's about a 20 min hike from the highway down into the area.

Great photo! Nice tones, scene and water is the best! Would you like to sell ND400 filter (if it's 52mm)...cause in Croatia we have no place to buy it...

I agree. Very glad I was able to capture it. Hiking back to the car in the dark was worth it!

This is beautifully composed and you've dealt with noise really well...very smooth.

It looks a little grey though in the water and around the rocks though.
There's not a lot of light in the scene, and I think a some burning of the ocean and the foreground would maek the image a lot more dramatic.

most excellent advice. I went back in added a 50% gray overlay layer took out a huge soft brush at about 30% opacity and hit the foreground. lowered the brush size and hit the rocks again. Much better. If I go anymore than this I start to get a lot of noise. It really did add a lot to the image. Thanks Andy!

That looks better
That's my favourite burn/dodge technique you've used there...it givs so much control over the effect, and almost always looks great.
Nice work mate

ya the dodge and burn tools in Photoshop CS2 are beyond cheese. thanks for the on this. Right after I took this shot I was breaking down my gear and I dropped my ND400 into the ocean after it (of course) bounced off a rock. I did manage to retrieve it and after I managed to get the sand blown off it it looks like it's gonna be OK. of course I've never dropped a filter before so might as well start with the most expensive in my bag right? Well at least my ISO was not set to 800 this time.

Funny you should say that. I dropped my ND400 on a rock a few weeks back. It bounced and the glass broke out of the metal housing, along with a small ring.
I sighed, accepted it had gone for ever, then picked up the seperate pieces and realised that the glass didn't have a mark on it, and that it would all fit pack together.
I've used it various times since and it's fine.
The folks at Hoya really make strong filters
