Description EDIT: this image was changed to a Black and White Version (5/24/2007). The original color image can be found in my scraps . It was changed at the request of several of my watchers and other deviant users who said they preferred the b&w version. Thanks for all the feedback.

This is taken at the Kona Surf & Racquet Club in Kailua Kona , Hawaii

I'm not really happy with it overall. I can only get out and shoot about once a week and this week the light was pretty bad. It was VERY overcast and just nasty. Even the sunset was nothing (set behind the clouds) that's rare for here. Of course just my luck I guess.

Anyway I did some post process work to make this even workable IMO.

Post Processing:
-Converted from RAW in Adobe camera raw
-Border, Vignette, noise texture overlay added in Photoshop CS2
-Curves (master) Adj.
-Channel Mixer Adj. layer
-Channel Mixer B&W conversion.
-Unsharp Mask Filter (x2)

well its funny, given your coments, and the great colour in your gallery ( hawaii must be a tough gig ) that I would chose this pic to view and coment on. I like the drama light and depth of the shot!

I know what you mean about only having one day a week to shoot. It's exactly the same for me, and it makes me really dependant on good weather.
Recently, we've had good weather, but I've made bad choices of location and not been able to get a shot. I was in a place like this on Monday, but the spray coming off the waves was so intense that my filters and lens were just dripping..every exposure has spray on it..too much to clean off and retain the integrity of the shot.

Still, even shooting in these conditions can teach you a lot about compostition and exposure...even if the end results are disappointing.

This is a nicely balanced shot, it's well exposed between the bright rock in the ocean and the shadows in the foreground, and it's nicely composed.
All it needs is a good sky. So next time, when the weather is better, you'll already know how to compose for it and the shot will be great

Oh and now I can go back any time there is a good sky and light. I just got my ND400 in the mail! :joy:

It's a great filter, pity it's so inconvenient to screw on/of every time you want to compose.

Word of advice, don't trust the nikon's meter when you're using it, always over-expose with it by 2 stops.

Thanks for the comments Andy. I totally agree with you. I really think if I had some good weather here this could be a neat shot. I took this same shot in a vertical and horizontal and was really trying to work on the composition. In the end it just worked better to take the vertical image and square it, crop out the sky and dump a bit of my foreground anchor.

This was taken about 10 mins or less before sunset (sun is behind me here) If I could get some good front light on a sky with some drama this could be a really neat image.

There was a good amount of spray but only a few drops on my lens so I was able to clean it up. If the tide had been in it would of been crazy that water was slamming in there pretty hard. I also took one at a 10 second exposure but the water was hitting so hard it just did not look right and lost a lot of detail.

You are 100% right however! I did learn something here and am going to go back and shoot it in better weather for sure. Should be easy now that I know how to compose for it.

Thanks again so much for the comments. Much appreciated.

I think I prefer this version. There's a nice contrast, and with the rain, this has a pretty good mood
