Oh they are just garter snakes. They calm down pretty fast when you find them in the grass. Also they have the tiniest teeth and no venom.

I grew up with a lot of King Brown snakes around the property here, hence my unease. I'm in Australia, by the way.
What then is the Garter snakes defence mechanism?

They're just non-poisonous snakes that don't get very big. I'm sure it is low on the food chain when mid-sized birds are around. haha My sister said one bit her son and it drew blood but I never had them draw blood when I got bit when I was young.

I kind of like that it focused on his body, it makes it look like he's moving to bump into the camera. We have a new cat that likes to headbutt, haha.

I always had a knack for finding garter snakes in MI. I can smell snakes in the high grass. I picked this one up and it calmed down pretty fast. I now live in the DC/MD area and we have poisonous snakes so I'm not so quick to go picking them up.

10 species in one garden? Nice! Lots of chances for pictures. In Michigan, USA, these are garden (Garter) snakes and are so easy to find and are not poisonous. They don't go into trees. I placed it there. haha

He was just a little Garter Snake in Michigan. I found him in the grass and took pics of him and let him go. Once he calmed down, he was a nice snake.

Actually, garter snakes are all over Michigan and once they get used to being held, they are pretty calm. I was visiting a friend and just got lucky and saw it in the grass. They're pretty small too.

It's funny cuz if you know Gardner Snakes, you know they'll never be in trees. I had to put him up there. Once he calmed down, he was pretty tame.

You don't see his whole body in the tree because you'll NEVER see a garter snake in a tree haha. I don't really like staging pics but he looked so cool.
