Description A card I painted for a friend I haven't heard from in several years. She loves songbirds and cats (yes, I know jays are technically corvids), so I decided to combine the two.

I'm thinking of doing more of these, and writing custom messages on the inside in with calligraphy. Would anyone be interested?

Watercolor on 140 lb cold press paper. 5 X 7 inches.

really cool idea. I'm trying to get better at bird wings in general. Could you offer any tips. Nice job with the colors btw.

You suck, because I pretty much had the same idea, but your corvid is much better then my corvid. XP (j/k)

This one looks great. I didn't realize that it was part cat until I read the description. The idea rather reminds me of childrens books by Ursula Le Guin back in Elementary school.

Whoaly muffins, that bird has a cat body HAHA wow, it's so cool how at first you dont see that
It's a totaly optical illusion, thats so neat.

The watercolour is amazing and the details are great

I wish I could take credit and be like, "hell yeah, totally meant to make it an optical illustion," but it really just happened that way XD I think it's because I used similar colors for the tree and cat body.

Well sometimes happy accidents are just fun
I think the position of the birdy feet help too, because the front half has the complete posture of a bird. Works well

that idea sounds wonderful!
the idea of a songbird is some kind of a modern gryphon - and it looks great! maybe they'll be house-pet gryph
the colours are great! - those light and a bit pale colours give a great atmosphere!
and wonderful detail!

Actually, corvids do come under the overall umbrella of 'songbirds' even though they don't sing.

I like this. It's got good colours and it's an idea I haven't seen before.

Although the front legs look a little too delicate in comparison to the hind ones, I still think this is a very unique and well-executed idea. It's beautifully painted.

yes, I know jays are technically corvids

Corvids are technically still passerines, so they count as songbirds. I think that's right. I'm too lazy to go and check my birding book. *frowns at self*

Also. I LOVE this picture!

A jay gryphon with cat legs in the front would be interesting, too. The jay's legs look a bit stiff, though I could fix that in future paintings. Thanks! ^^

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

SordxMaelstrom In reply to windfalcon [2007-03-15 03:53:22 +0000 UTC]

Well, it's just that the common bird's legs are too thin to actually look like substantial front legs. And when I first saw this, I just thought it was a rather long blue jay. Would increase the feeling that this is a hybrid instead of a cat stump attached to a bird if the bird legs were in the back. Just some thoughts.

windfalcon In reply to SordxMaelstrom [2007-03-15 03:58:42 +0000 UTC]

Traditionally, gryphons have bird front-legs and feline rear-legs, though I suppose you can draw a gryphon any way.

SordxMaelstrom In reply to windfalcon [2007-03-15 05:47:23 +0000 UTC]

Very true, but eagles (and lions) were commonly used. And it is possible to show them with very thick legs. Too bad that can't be said for everyday birds. I hardly think your little gryphon is "traditional."

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

windfalcon In reply to SordxMaelstrom [2007-03-15 16:46:45 +0000 UTC]

Of course - a jay/cat gryphon is anything but traditional and I knew about the eagle/lion traditional mix. But the 'traditional' mixture for a gryphon is usually some kind of bird/cat. A bird/horse would be a hippogryph, for example.

SordxMaelstrom In reply to windfalcon [2007-03-16 03:31:28 +0000 UTC]

Traditional, the bird/cat might be, I doubt you'd see a jay/house cat gryphon on many family crests. The original concept was pulled from a lion and eagle. But we're taking this conversation too far.
