Why is the overlords still 3D models :[
You seemed to have 2D drawings of them already in the other to scale images...Β
(also the Starcraft to Scale gallery folder is missing a few images that you have in yourΒ 2D Starcraft Art folder...)

Before Heart of the Swarm came out, I did an overlord drawing that I didn't especially like. Some parts of it were good, and were based on designs from the original and from StarCraft: Ghost, but I never liked the overall shape. At the time I also didn't love how round the SC2 design wasβ there's some amazing-quality fan art out there, but in terms of shape there the SC2 overlord is basically a balloon with a face on the front.
Then when Heart of the Swarm came out, I had to update all my sizes with the new information, draw a whole bunch of new units, etc. And they also released this little piece of concept art for a cinematic overlord design , which completely won me over with its body shapeβ still keeping all those good SC2 features, but not on a sphere! But I was also teaching myself a lot 3D art at the time, so I thought about replacing units on the chart I made good 3D models for. In this one the Brood War sprite Zergling is actually a 3D model, and in my terran chart submission the Valkyrie and Wraith are as well. The reason the overlords stand out here is because I knew the process of texturing them was taking forever, and I wanted to release the newest (at the time) version of the sizes.
Then, before Legacy of the Void came out, I got contacted by Blizzard to make an official version of the chart. I ditched the 3D models, and spent a lot of time cleaning up and revising the older drawings and doing new ones. And that's when I did this new overlord drawing.
By that point I wasn't going to go back and re edit these charts which I've labelled as 'Old,' because it would just be a lot of work, and I was working on the LotV version. A lot of the sizes had to be slightly tweaked, I would have to replace the older drawings with the fixed versions, and I would have to rearrange things to fit in more units. I can't really update just one thing and leave the rest of the now-inaccurate sizes alone, so it's also kind of in my best interest to make it clear that this version is incomplete, and that the sizes in the Legacy of the Void version are more official, even though it has fewer units in it.
I still think about drawing more hero or campaign units, or buildings, and making more updates to this project, but I've been working full time as a 3D artist for a while now, so when I have the time for Starcraft art I would generally rather be doing 3D or higher-quality 2D images, like the digital paintings I did for the portrait contest. I probably will do more chart work in the future but it's very time consuming.

I also loved how, in the original Starcraft especially, it looked like there was a whole structure and system of hollows and things underground, beneath the creep and the surface. I imagine hive clusters being almost anthill-like, with interconnected tunnels. Maybe some of the buildings we think we know well, like the spawning pool, actually have extensive underground components. A really nice contrast to the Terran buildings, which clearly just landed on the surface.

also; where did ou get reference for broodwar devourer? the old cinematics?Β reference for brutalisk?
π: 0 β©: 1
xiaorobear In reply to Ovvkoz [2014-08-10 01:23:04 +0000 UTC]
There are not very good references for the Devourer. The Brood War Protoss cinematic shows a large number of Guardians, Mutalisks and Devourers flying towards the Xel'Naga temple. All of the zerg flyers are pretty much just blurry blobs in it, but you can tell that they're all around the same size, though guardians are much wider. This doesn't help a lot, but it at least lets you know the Devourer isn't some 200m capital ship-sized monster.
There is a great image of the Devourer model from the side in this Brood War loading screen , but the scale is really weird in that picture. The Hive on the cliff suggests that Devourers are really big! But there are also Zerglings climbing down the cliff that suggest that the Hive is really tiny! I do feel comfortable concluding that they're plenty bigger than Zerglings, but not, like, 100x bigger or anything. That's about it.
I have no reference for the Brutalisk at all. The original model was intended for a normal-sized Zerg unit, as this great PhillGonzo image shows. People told me it's supposed to be bigger than an ultralisk, so I made it bigger than an ultralisk.
Thanks!

nice work, bu ti totally agree with the new scourge. the old design, with the massive teeth, was awesome. it would also be really cool to see the drop pod that contained whole zerg structures. keep up the good work ^_^
