Description
Richard Harolds was never really present in his children's life, and he closed himself even more after his wife's death. Lately he seems to have thought over his absence and now he wants to make up for it. So he decided he would pay his children's college and invite them to have dinner together at home at least once a month.
Alex remembered an early time in his childhood when mr. Harolds used to act like something that would resemble a father. An imposing, intimidating presence that made him recollect every little misdeed with just a disapproval glare. That was probably the only way he knew how to deal with his kids, and now he seemed to have reverted to his former role in the family. Sitting at the head of a table that is too long and has too many empty seats, he stood there, cold and impassive, making Alex feel guilty for thing s he didn't even know what they were. And that pissed him the hell off, to say the least.
Maia has never been really bothered by not having a caring father, as Alex provided her all the emotional support she'd need since they were kids. Her presence at the dinner always lightens the mood between father and son. She's constantly laughing over how too serious and old-fashioned Richard is, and everytime he tries to make displeased remarks about Alex and Maia's life choices she averts any conflict by making big, teary puppy eyes and asking why her father is so mean to them. Alex knows that's an act and is internally laughing his ass off. But Richard doesn't know: he panics and changes the subject immediately.
He loves his kids after all; just wished he was better at expressing that.
