"Whoa, an AT-XT! Two powerful chin guns, an energy mortar launcher, and recharging plasma deflector shields...By the Oceans of Dac, why'd they ever stop making these?!" "Because a bunch of bureaucrats with no clue on how to win wars said so." - Lieutenant Squorran "Squid" and Lieutenant Leelia "Trapper" of Grey Squadron during the Liberation of Phindar in 29 ABY.

The All-Terrain Experimental Transport was one of Rothana Heavy Engineering's first forays into developing a bipedal walker. They had experimented with it before with the AT-PT but the prototypes had been lost with the Katana Fleet, halting bipedal walker development for several decades. As part of the commission by Jedi Master Sifo-Dyas, Rothana had developed the AT-TE and SPHA in the years before the Clone Wars, and saw an opportunity to continue development of bipedal walkers since the loss of the AT-PT Prototypes decades before. Rothana had a sizable budget for developing the Clone Army's war machines still on hand in the final year before the Clone Wars, so they poured it all into the development of the AT-XT.

The AT-XT wouldn't see deployment until roughly a week after the Battle of Geonosis where it was mass deployed to the Grand Army of the Republic. The AT-XT was first deployed during the Battle of Raxis Prime during the Clone Wars and served through to the Battle of Thule during the Dark Reaper Campaign. After the campaign though, the production of AT-XTs was dramatically scaled back to cut costs as a single walker cost more than an AT-TE did to produce, and upkeep on the AT-XT was quite high as well. As a result, after the Dark Reaper Campaign the Grand Army would only deploy the AT-XT during battles seen as vital to the Republic and were reserved exclusively for the Republic's elite armor commanders and crews throughout the remainder of the Clone Wars.

After the Clone Wars, the AT-XT would see similarly limited use by the Empire, again restricting them to the most elite of armor commanders and crews. General Maximilian Veers was even presented an AT-XT for his service, which he placed on display outside of his private residence on his homeworld of Denon and later recovered by the New Republic following his defection after Endor. Veers himself preferred using the AT-AT anyway. The New Republic stopped using walkers, including the AT-XT, seeing them as symbols of Imperial Tyranny. However the 501st Legion has continued using them, keeping them upgraded and up to date. As before, AT-XTs are reserved for only the Legion's elite armor crews.

Walker enthusiasts and armor crews alike often consider the AT-XT to be the TIE Defender or TIE Advance X1 of walkers.

The AT-XT was an experimental walker in several ways. Primarily it was experimental in its use of two legs, starting a trend that would lead to the smaller and faster AT-RT, the urban patrol AT-DP and it's AT-AR cousin, and most infamously the AT-ST. Compared to the latter three walkers, the AT-XT is self-sufficient, possessing its own reactor similar to larger walkers such as the AT-TE or SPHA. The other three walkers require large power cells that have to be removed and recharged regularly. The AT-XT's chin-guns were quite powerful, proving strong enough to pierce most enemy armor with a sustained barrage of fire. In addition to the chin guns, the AT-XTs carried an experimental energy proton mortar launcher. The Launcher was based off of a prototype energy bomblete generator that was lost to pirates out of Lok in the decades prior to the Clone Wars, only geared towards energy mortars instead. The mortars had an incredible range, and the targeting computers on the walkers were advanced enough for near pin-point accuracy with the mortars, leading to some Separatist Generals to wonder if the mortars weren't homing mortars of some kind. The mortar generator also gave the walker a limitless supply of walkers and could hold enough charges for three mortars to be fired before having to recharge.

But perhaps the AT-XT's most notable piece of experimental tech was a small recharging plasma deflector shield generator. The Plasma Deflectors could absorb staggering amounts of punishment, even reflect most laser fire away. The only drawback to the shields was that they could only remain active for a few seconds, usually around three to four seconds at a time before shutting down to recharge for almost a minute. The shields also only protected the main body and not the legs, so if the legs were taken out, the walkers would still collapse and be defeated. Most crews though found it to be a fair trade off and learned to use the shields in a pinch.

Wish the new republic keep these was part of their force since they didn't serve the empire at all.

In my universe though, they did serve the Empire and they serve the New Republic too through the 501st.

Yes but most of the vehicles the new republic has were rebellion vecs.

There's something of a "real world" element I'm taking here. Imagine if, after World War II, the US started using German tanks or Japanese Warships (disclaimer: we did take a few German warships and such as war spoils but we didn't continue production of them). That wouldn't exactly go well with American soldiers and sailors or people in general to see your own forces using machines and vessels used by an enemy long associated with tyranny. It wouldn't look good. Some would be able to argue that "We just defeated enemies who used those same weapons! Have we become the very enemy we fought against?!"

In the case of the Empire, they used many of their war machines specifically in a psychological warfare as well as general warfare. I mean the sight of those towering AT-ATs approaching from the distance intimidated even the strongest soldiers. It's largely for the symbolic and psychological reasons they abandoned use of the walkers since they are too closely related to Imperial Tyranny. It's a little different for the old Star Destroyers though. Those were more out of necessity since they needed to replenish their fleets quickly after formation.

Well couldn’t the new republic find new type of vechiles instead relying on rebellion era tech?

I think we've had this conversation before. They do have newer tech, I just haven't seen anything new in the games and mods I've played so I can't easily do new ships/vehicles. I've scoured Wookieepedia too looking for any post-Endor tech in terms of ground units, but outside of new ships, I've seen nothing in the way of tanks and the like. All the tanks I can find were Clone Wars or Galactic Civil War era. Believe me, if I find new tech, I'll consider it. And if, somehow, we see some kind of Resistance tech that looks decent then I'll consider it.

Edit, I have found one, exactly one, new piece of New Republic Tech: starwars.fandom.com/wiki/Forei…
