Description

The summer’s day was clear and bright, a perfect day Beka thought, to put her long training to the test. She had been training since the winter on a contraption to help her develop the skills to ride Ela bareback. The contraption was basically a replica of Ela’s back attached at the corners to rope that could be pulled to attempt to throw Beka to the padding. Her cousins had had quite a bit of fun with seeing how long it would take before they could make Beka loose her balance. By the start of summer, no matter what they did, Beka stayed on the back of the fake cat.

She called to Ela and the cat bounded up to her happy to get the scratch under the chin. “Let’s go have fun,” the young woman said softly, she had ridden the shedu with a saddle over the winter and spring so the cat was used to weight on her back. Ela was surprised through when Beka clambered up onto her back without putting a saddle on. The cat gave her a strange look, “It’s a new type of fun Ela,” Beka said with a grin, she squeezed Ela’s sides and leaned forward, the command she had taught the cat for moving forward. With her hands firmly gripping the shedu’s mane she directed the cat to the steep rocky slopes along the edges of the valleys. Beka gripped the cat’s sides with her bare feet and smiled.

Up they climbed moving faster and faster as the shedu gained confidence in Beka’s position in her back. They were heading to the overlook to the lake. Ela had found it was a favorite place of her rider to go cliff diving into the lake. The cat had even joined her in a few occasions, growing comfortable with jumping off in her own time. By the time the cliff edge approached, Ela was running at full tilt. Both she and her rider felt excitement build in them as the shedu bounded up to the edge and lept.

Together, cat and rider flew. The thirty meter drop to the lake was met with a very Indian whoop from the girl, and a challenging yowl from the cat. The splash when they landed created a large wave though as they surfaced Beka laughed with joy and Ela nudged her ready to go again.
