Description I don't have much to say on this one, for a change.
I'm still relying on layer modes to do my shading, a bad habit to make, and one I'm going to try and break in my next piece. All in all, I like how this came out; the violin gave me a lot of chances to add extra details and pay attention to these, and I enjoyed being able to do that.

Thanks.

I'm actually thinking of re-doing this particular piece with stuff that I've learned more recently (This piece is 4 years old at this point. ).

I do actually play violin, so I know what you mean. I don't play particularly well, but I love having those "moments", as you said.

Oh, actually, it may be really good!! For my series that I'm creating XD, I'm creating a series (Phoenix Wright) and I need concept ideas on a 'Violin Girl'. Is it okay if I use this picture? I'll credit you if you let me, but if not, I understand. It is still awesome.

Not bad for using layer modes, but it's still obvious that the color transition (lighter side to darker side) isn't smooth. The brightness on the face is good, but the rest of the left side seems a touch too bright. Then the drop in brightness to the shadow side is too abrupt.
You also neglected shading the hands, though those are hard, I understand.

Overall, not bad.
The lower left part of the hair and the middle section of the violin are nicely done.

The two middle fingers on her bow hand should be a bit closer together. Like, touching. I do like that she was so into her playing that she broke a bow hair! My elementary school orchestra teacher gave us candy if we played hard enough to break bow hairs or strings during concerts. (We ate. A lot. )

You are very good at drawing proportions. I also like all of the colors you put into the violin. I've seen on music specials how they talk about each violin having it's own voice, all depending on how it was made... your drawing reminds me of that craftsmanship. ^_^

OhStuffit [2008-11-04 18:18:49 +0000 UTC]

That's a lovely idea and you've portrayed it extremlely well! The colouring is fantastic and the clothes are pretty much spot on. One thing I'd say is her left hand (right to viewer) is out of proportion compared to the right. Her face is also cartoonish compared to her body. I think the broken string idea is charming and as I play the Viola, I smiled 'cause I can relate to that. *Faving*

Violin!! -stares-
I never brought myself to actually trying to play one of those. All I know is that I'd probably saw the strings in half....

Anyway, excellent tone! Again, the lighting definately compliments the character, and gives an almost dreamish touch to it.

Forehead and bangs feel a little too soft-focus. I love the detail paid - the string on the bow is wonderful. The fingers on the bow seems to have a tad a too much tension, but I can't imagine the hand being easy to draw.

Tacoly [2008-10-11 14:16:13 +0000 UTC]

The colouring is absolutely gorgeous <3 It's a very pretty drawing.
However, the right hand's fingers are a bit too far away from each other - I play the violin and from what I know that's not exactly how you hold the bow. Also, the positioning of the bow is a bit off. If you look at the violin, the bow is almost at the top of it (of the main body anyway, not the grip board), and the top of the bow is bent in the wrong direction. I hope you get what I mean xD
I love the dress and hair, and again: great job with the colouring <3 Keep it up!

You're very good at drawing hands - I'm terrible! I particularly love the colouring of the violin.

However, something about the face bugs me. I can't pick out what... it might be the eyes? Or the face shape.

But, all in all, it's a very nice piece =]

HidesHisFace [2008-10-09 21:33:09 +0000 UTC]

Good work, I can tell. I really like the colouring and the concept.
Still - it need some work.
First thing - hands - it's hard to say what is really wrong here - they just look quite flat and unnatural.
It's much easier to draw hands when you imagine them as block-build things.
Second - shading - generally it is well done but there are some places where should be shadows and they are not like hands and place under the violin.

Her forehead, eyes and eyebrows look way off - and it's like there's a white string attached to the violin. Also, she lacks a chin and thumb.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

darue In reply to hikariri [2008-09-26 19:39:54 +0000 UTC]

Hm? What do you mean by "she lacks a chin and thumb"?
If you've ever played violin (or seen somebody play), this is the proper position to play it in, and the chin and thumbs happen to be hidden by the violin from this angle. Also, the string at the end of the bow is a loose hair that broke during the performance, which is common (at least in my experience).

Now that you mention it, though, I did make the forehead a bit too big... I'm not sure what you mean with the eyes though; they are drawn that way due to stylistic decisions. Could you clarify exactly how they seem "off"?

Is there anything else that you can see that I messed up?
Heh, I love critique.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

hikariri In reply to darue [2008-09-26 20:24:57 +0000 UTC]

Now as I never played violin, I don't know about strings loosening in the progress - I just know that the hot violistes I saw in the orchestra had a chin not hidden by the violin (as can be seen on images.google,) but now you mention it, you are right about the thumb as a voilin is not a guitar (hah. )

The eyes look very flat, low placed and thick in relation with the eyebrows, the eyebrows are nothing but two (seemingly) hastily drawn lines above the square eyes, and her right eye lacks a 'fade'-effect, it doesn't become thinner when it flows to the backside. (Holy hell my English is awful.)
And in addition, the forehead kind of lacks a foreheadistic shape, to be honest

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

darue In reply to hikariri [2008-09-26 23:24:18 +0000 UTC]

"foreheadistic shape"?
I'm so using that, one way or another...

As for the eyes, I see what you mean now... It's not a fade effect, by the way; I used a hard smudge to give them a bit more texture, though now I see what you are saying. I used myself as a model here, looking at myself in the mirror as I held the violin up against my shoulder; but it still could be correct. Say... she was tilting her head a bit to the side and sliding the violin forward... I guess.

Thanks for the critiques.
