Description German chocolate/vanilla cake with poured fondant and frosting colored squares. Made alongside my friend Jessica, for our friend Tim's welcome back/surprise/sorry we missed your birthday but you were in Germany cake. The cakes were from mixes - two German chocolate, one yellow - because we were unfortunately running short on time. They were cut and stacked with buttercream frosting in between the layers. We tried a poured fondant, which worked okay (some of the corners were dodgy, and because we didn't know that you should put something underneath for a smooth surface, we had some crumb-y spots). Our biggest mistake was thinking that a poured fondant could be used as a rolled fondant to make the squares. We ended up changing to colored frosting at the last minute, because the fondant was just melting off. The end result was not exceptionally pretty, but damn tasty.

Time: around 9 hours (not including cooling time for cakes and setting time for fondant, but including cake baking time - small oven = baking three separate cakes, one at a time).
Costs: Around $10. Cake mixes are inexpensive!
Casualties: My favorite bamboo cutting board, my table, Jess's foot and both of our hands were hit by the black food coloring. My cutting board sustained permanent damage but everything else eventually washed off. -P
