You might not know this about me, but I am obsessed with betta fish. I adore them! I love how predatory and feisty they are -- even their anti-social nature charms me. Their gorgeous fins and colors are breath-taking and the best part? Only the boys get this fancy and froufrou.
I can spend hours looking at picture after picture of these fabulous living ornaments.
Here is something I've been working on off and on for a while. Trying to capture the fancy fins and colors with felt was very challenging but ultimately quite rewarding. The "scales" effect needs work, I think, but I'm so proud that he can stand on his own!
This guy is a halfmoon tail with dragon scale coloring... There's more to categorizing the particular characteristics of their colors and tails so if someone wants to tell me how you would identify this one, please let me know in a comment.
Needle felted wool over pipe cleaner with fish sticker eyes from a fly shop. He's about five inches long.

Oh wow it's SO CUTE. You captured the fish so perfectly, ahhh ;a; I love Betta, and this is just precious. And it's bigger than I thought it was, when I looked on etsy! If only I could even remotely afford it lD May I respectfully ask your justification on the price? How do you calculate your prices?

Such beautiful colours! We got a betta fish this year, Mum's birthday present, he's a butterfly half moon in peach and gold - absolutely beautiful and such a character too! I really love the gradients you've captured all over him, the little scales are really gorgeous

That's really fantastic. I love the way the scales look overall; but you're right in that it could use refinement. I think scales are hard in general... but like nearly everything else about needlefelting, it's likely more time-consuming than difficult per se.
I don't know if you plan on doing more, but if you're looking to improve your technique with scales, you might consider looking at some of ~Lobster-Ball 's works. In particular, I remember a rather fantastically well-done alligator. I wonder if I can find it-- ah, there it is. fav.me/d67elts
Unfortunately I cannot seem to remember where to find the other example that immediately sprung to mind... it was basically layering pre-made felt in a very pleasing way. Perhaps not as applicable as the other example, anywho.
