Description Canon 50D
Tamron 10-24mm wide angle

Got lucky with this shot one night when *Nebraskies and I went out to do star trails. I ended up not doing star trails. I was too fascinated with the milky way This is a 10mm frame, so that meteor on the left was much larger in person. Then of course the Milky Way in the middle over the house, and the moon on the right sinking into the light pollution. All in all, a pretty cool scene

Please tell me what you think!

I miss living in the middle of nowhere. You get the best night time pics of the sky that way.

P.S: I'm glad you post this, it's beautiful.

Amazing photo and really magical atmosphere! Question: is the Milky way visible with the eye?? I mean..cause I never really saw it before XD

FramedByNature In reply to Varjo-Valo [2011-01-23 06:59:47 +0000 UTC]

Thanks! Yes, it is. You have to be far enough away from light pollution to see it, but it's definitely visible

Love the house in the middle, though I can still see the details. Were it a complete silhouette, it would be perfect. Another point I want to make is the color transformation. It is brilliant. It's like there are 2 moons or the moon and the sun looking from outer space. The Milky way looks like the smoke coming out from the chimney That warms my heart. One BIG flaw in this picture is unfortunately the meteor or comet (I think it's a comet rather than a meteor), it breaks the harmony of the whole picture. Should it be up and across the sky, it would have been WAYYYYY better and the photo would have been flawless and perfect and might have made me yell out and somehow find a way to get a print... But it didn't.....
..............That slice of light is still bothering me....

Anyway, great job. And I officially am jealous of you

Thank you very much. I thought the same thing about the meteor, however, I wouldn't consider it a flaw. After all, I can't control meteors. Heck, it's hard enough just to capture one. I know it's a meteor because meteors appear as quick flashes. Comets are more like slow glowing dust balls that gradually make their way across the sky over a long period of time. It was annoying how vertically situated that meteor was situated though

For crying out loud, it was a 30 second shot Anyway, great job I wish I could have a camera like yours

Yeah, a 30 second shot and the meteor took up about half a second of it Thank you!

If it were ever dark enough around here, I'd have a similar picture up already.

Now instead of star trails (which are certainly awesome in their own right) you should do this as a time lapse image so we can watch the Milky Way and the moon move across the sky. All else failing, you can just smoosh them together into a star trail later.

Next time we go out there I'll probably try that. That kind of thing is so cool, makes you feel really small
