Description Old soldiers are dear to my heart, as I spent my time in the army and made and lost friends there. The Afghanistans, historically, have been fierce fighters and are to this day. This picture isn't political, but only honours the soldier. I left the face partially unfinished to represent the cultural divide in understanding between the Middleeast and the West. Hopefully someday we'll be able to fill that gap in a possitive way.

Yes, histoically the Afghans have always been fierce fighters, and despite being occupied several times in the last couple hundred years, one can never say that they have been conquered. And to continue with the thoughts of history, it would do certain world leaders well to look to history, since neither the British Empire, nor the Soviets were able to defeat the Afghans, and if we fail to learn the mistakes of the past, we are doomed to repeat them.

I too would love to see the intolerance and ignorance that is prevailant on both sides at present to be resolved. Unfortunately, I don't realistically see that happening while there are things to be gained on both sides by protracting a war that in the end, serves no purpose, other than to continue the terrible downward spiral that we are all being dragged down.

For me, his eyes have such great impact. Maybe it's their surprising colour, or how they appear more worked than the rest of the portrait. This is a wonderful work.

It's rare that you see a picture left unfinished on purpose. The symbolism that it conveys is powerful.

I love the strong black lines in this--they display so much character.
