“YE FECKIN’ BALL O’ FLUFF, DO SOMETHING ALREADY!!”
So far this battle was not going as planned. Rory, itching for payback for having that gigantic feathered demon of a vulture thrown at his face, had challenged the head medic (or “the Harpy”, as he and many of the cadets preferred to call her) to a practice fight as soon as the so-called “battle square” had been unveiled during the morning roll call. At the time he’d thought that pitting his new avian companion against Averys’s smaller, seemingly more docile vulture would be a safe bet for victory.

Apparently not.

It was painfully obvious that Rigel was not ready for this type of battle. Harpeia, as the Mandibuzz was called, simply taunted the tiny Swablu the entire time. Any time Rigel dared to get close enough to try something she’d flick and flip him away with a gust of wind or chase him around the field to pluck his tail feathers while Averys stood to the side and smirked. The practice field, already battered by the day’s previous battles, was soon choked with dust kicked up from the grass by the birds’ flight which only served to disorient Rigel further.

And now the panicked bird was flying straight for Rory, with Harpeia hot on his wingbeats.

“NO, ye bloody daft little sod! Go the other way, THE OTHER WAY!!” Rory bellowed, frantically trying to backpedal before the vulture could collide into him, but he ended up falling hard on his ass anyway when he lost his balance and fell backwards. He groaned a stream of muttered obscenities as Harpeia swept over him and the head medic laughed.

“I say, that was a splendid show you and that fluffball of yours put up, McClain.” Averys remarked as she strode through a cloud of dust to stand over the spluttering Scot. “Better than even I could have anticipated. You do realize that you just lost against the terrain control, right?” she added with another infuriatingly smug look. But the expression quickly hardened and was replaced with a tight frown. “You and that bird had better shape up quickly, McClain. The war’s not going to wait forever, and if you keep up like this you’re both going to find yourselves wrapped up with an entirely new set of tags in the morgue.”

The jab still hung heavily in Rory’s ears long after they had both stalked from the practice field. A few hours later he pulled Mathis aside while they stood in line for the slop that passed for dinner around the camp. “Meet me at the practice field after Mess. An’ bring that damned devil coney with ye.”

“Zhe practice field, zhat late in zhe evening? Whatever for?”

“It’s time tae put our noses tae the grindstone.”

TREEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEES. *SHAKEFIST* Lighting and coloring gave me a lot of grief as well, but hopefully it's not as crummy as I think it is. At least the birds came out the way I wanted them to. I REALLY REALLY LOVE DRAWING SWABLU AND MANDIBUZZ HOLYCRAP. <333

Also. How do I shoes.

Had to rush this SO MUCH, I'm gonna be out of town and in the land of no interwebs for the next few days. But DAMN IT if I was gonna miss that original deadline because of a silly thing like that. D8<
