Daunting is the figure Gao. With a face unreactive and naturally stern most assume what sort of personality he has. Strict, unbending, willful, cruel. More words will surely come to mind, and not all of them wrong. With years under his belt of skillful manipulation of mankind, the one thing he can not stand is the unruly nature of emotions, and likewise, his own have been forged to fit his ideal uniform. The only cracks to break through, his occasional combustive temperament or passion for something he holds dear to his heart.
With his sort of solipsistic mindset, Gao often sees others are lesser than himself, and although he keeps deferential with most, his arrogance can shine through in his actions and speech. Especially when he meets other particularly prideful individuals, feeling a need to remind them of just how much they must work on before they could consider them anywhere near equals.
Trusted allies, respected creatures, or resourceful individuals get to see a slight different in his personality. He is more likely to trust them with the emotional side of his opinions, or listen to their advice. Gao will expend extra energy to help them if it is not too much of a hindrance, or even go out of his way to ask the simple question earnestly of, how are you? To most this might seem common practice, but to Gao it is a grand act.
Backstory:
Gao was produced by a pureblood family as the third son. Eldest already well primed for marriage and glory, second an ace in dueling before he had his first breath. Last name alone a heavy burden, expectations mounting. Everything was a comparison. Had he cast his first spell early? Perhaps but brother casted earlier, won second in his first dual? Brother won first. A wonderful score? Grandfather did better. There wasn’t a moment of time for interacting with other wizards- perhaps they’d taint him with their frivolous, childish thoughts. Nor was there ever any pressure to find a wife, that was just something mother would take care of.
He just needed to focus on his career, his talents, his name. His two brothers had found prominent careers, so what could he do to match them? Well, why not an Auror? He had the scores for it, the family name, and the dedication, so it wasn’t hard to get in. In fact it had been- jarringly easy. Day one, a lack in the department in the dark arts, and a lax in rules had Gao on the field day one, promising to go over proper training- “You’ll do fine!”
“Things were different in my day, they didn’t make you jump through hoops like circus animals.”
The new job offered him a new kind of release he never found in school. New experiences he was never given, new people he was never permitted to speak to before, after all, ‘it’s for work.’ Gao found the years after to be full of experimentation, emotion, wild romances, violence, and a few cheeky bends of the law, the department didn’t have to know. Questionable means to finnish the job overlooked for outstanding completion rates and expediency, it didn’t take him long to be more than old money, didn’t take long to be friends of the office. Cheeky and full of witty quips known to put a smile on your face.
“You know I was quite the charmer in my prime.”
This Golden Era lasted a decade before he remembered his other duty as a Bai. Marriage. A young up and coming muggle born witch had been found, hailing from a wealthy political Chinese family. Although it was unprecedented for their pureblood family to mix and muddle their blood, his mother had already wed both older brothers to pureblood women, and the chance at a muggle influence was too tempting to pass up. He was transferred to England where she was going to school, and soon after married.
Old friend’s left behind, an entirely new life, a stranger as his partner, Gao felt obligated to be as he had once before, a perfect son. Discipline returned, his stoic and serious demeanor returned.
Until the war.
His brother never called him unless it was holidays. The ministry was deep in it’s work, long night after long night pulled trying to put a stop to the Death Eaters. Life’s dedication to keeping the peace, and his brother calls, to ask a favor.
“What are their plans? What do they know? Baby brother, I need you to throw them off.”
Later that night reported his family of being Death Eaters to the ministry.
Him and his wife were put under protected services, but it didn’t keep them safe from a well connected family of Bai’s. His second eldest brother was caught in England and killed in a fight, His Eldest a bit more successful. Though not entirely. He may have made it past those posted outside their home, but not past Gao. That night left him unhinged, and his wife traumatized, the two kept separately from that night on.
But this time he would not stay put. He fled, and went to finish what he started. Missing for years, unheard from. Unseen.
He should of known better than to think he could take on his own mother. Although she did not go unscathed, in the end Gao lost by a good leg more than her. (Literally.) Defeated, he returned to the ministry, his name a scandal, his psyche put into question, his actions bordering criminal. He was tried, and tested, his case passed by years of good service as not guilty, but put on a long leave, which would not even guaranteed him a return to his old job. The wife afraid the scandal would hurt her career, and fearful of Gao filed for divorce, and after a short plight, was signed and passed.
“...”
After two years Gao managed to barely pass the psych eval and was allowed back in the ministry as a paper monkey. A few more years of that, and with the understanding he would always be watched, he was allowed back into the ranks of Auror but only in the department of Muggle Affairs. Good behavior and another eval allowed him back on his first easy field mission with a partner, continued time with his head held down allotted him back into something as close as he could to trust. Even helping to train new Aurors here and there. In recent years he is simply known as the ‘grumpy old fuck’, his transgressions forgotten as fresh blood moved in and old faces retired. Many do not know much of who he is, and those who do are not permitted to speak of it.
