I spent 2 hours sitting on the floor in the National Cowboy & Western Heritage Museum studying this amazing painting. I wanted to paint in the museum so that I could get something color-accurate. After much begging and bartering, the museum staff eventually agreed to let me bring in my laptop and tablet so that I could do color studies on site. (Thanks guys)
I didn't do a sketch so the structure of the piece is pretty loose. My main goal was to capture the color and I think that went well.
