Description

'In those years he learned much lore, hearing eagerly the histories of ancient days; and he became thoughtful, and sparing in speech. Often Beleg Strongbow came to Menegroth to seek him, and led him far afield, teaching him woodcraft and archery and (which he loved best) the handling of swords ...'

Great as always!
You don't find too many pictures of young Túrin growing up.
I love all the detail in the sword.

That is true, though there are a few around. I was listening to the Christopher Lee audiotape of the Narn last spring and jotted down some childhood images of Turin that I might try, including this one and the Second Sorrow of Turin piece. There's another one on my radar with Nellas (which would be my second attempt at that, but taken down from DA long ago!). We'll see when that shows up .

I tried myself on a Turin and Labadal   picture some years ago. There are only four other pictures on DeviantArt featuring this part of the story and they already were here, when I did mine.
Then again: Children of Húrin is full of iconic moments.

Indeed it is - I've been meaning to paint Labadal for a long long time from this period, but would also like to try him when reunited briefly (oh so briefly) with Turin later on. Come to think of there's just dozens and dozens of Children of Hurin scenes I want toattempt. But then I could say the same across the legendarium *sigh* ...

I know what you're talking about. I've got a long list of "things worth painting", but progress is oh so slow.

Beautiful illustration, I like all the details on the swords and clothes as well as the pillars in the background and all the various ornamental designs!

Thanks my friend. I really don't know how you do it with all the architectural details and clothing and patterning, etc. Sometimes I just want to get a big thick brush of H2O colour, and work completely loosely and freely!

MatejCadil In reply to peet [2017-02-01 21:49:30 +0000 UTC]

Yes, I sometimes like that style of work too. Especially when using oil pastels and drawing trees i enjoy working much more loosely.
But generally i think I have an inclination to more detailed drawings. Sometimes perhaps too much (and then I reproach myself for laying it so complicated and taking too much time to finish), but as soon I have the basic design thought out, I find drawing in the ornaments and patterns quite easy and calming (if sometimes time-consuming) work.

Thanks indeed; I've been thinking about Doriath-culture recently, so this came out of that I guess I picture Rivendell closest to it out of all the Beleriandic kingdoms for some reason, though I know it's really an amalgamation.

rittareart In reply to peet [2017-02-01 02:49:53 +0000 UTC]

That's interesting! Is it because of Elrond's mother kin?
I'd rather imagine Rivendell in noldorin style...I guess Elrond had better known it. May be not seen by his own yes, but from Maglor/Maedhros tales.

peet In reply to rittareart [2017-02-01 11:46:25 +0000 UTC]

I think it's subconscious on my part, in that there is very little left of Sindarin high-culture in the Second and Third Ages (yes you have Sindarin presences in the Greenwood and Lorien, but none ever near as glorious to Doriath). Likewise, Noldorin culture is already accounted for under Gil-Galad and especially Celebrimbor. Obviously by the TA, Rivendell is even more multicultural, but I just can't shift the association. I guess for me Rivendell is a repository of all types of Elven-culture - in a sense that's its point, manifested in the person of Elrond (literally). Yet I just can't help reliving the Thingol-Luthien-Beren pattern again through Elrond-Arwen-Aragorn, and it makes me think of Doriath!

I also think about multicultural Rivendell, but I guess my addiction to Noldor makes me think of Maglor first (though it's not really right...) when talking of Elrond

Well, we might also take note of the etymology:

'The name Elrond has been translated as "Star-dome",and "Vault of Heaven" recalling the glory of Menegroth though at an earlier stage, it was supposed to mean "Elf of the Cave".'

But I believe there is no right or wrong answer .

I think that this is perfect!! I often tend myself to be too perfectionist  but many Times is not important the technical virtuosity, but is much more important that the piece transmit emotions.
Very beautiful and well done!! ❤
