This has such a ghostly quality to it...I could almost believe that you are a ghost in this shot!

I was looking to do something a little cheesier but stumbled on the effect by accident. When I was younger I'd spent a fair amount of time in front of the camera but these days I prefer being behind. The term ghost is appropriate for the look of this photo, as well as for as glimpse back into my past. Getting older is wonderful, but there are times when I miss the energy of my youth.

Ha ha ha...I know what you mean about energy of youth! I teach high school and am so exhausted at the end of the day!!!

I would never go back to my teens...nor into my twenties...my early/mid thirties, yes. Despite having retired from competitive bodybuilding in 1988 (age 28) I didn't meet my full potential as an athlete until my thirties...too much info I suppose.

Opposite from me...I was a gymnast and hit my peak at around the age of 16!

Male gymnasts peak in their late twenties right? I've never been able to fully get my head around the difference in peaks, although I understand the loss of flexibility in female athletes after puberty is likely a key factor.

TanyaRW In reply to pfister [2007-09-30 06:47:49 +0000 UTC]

Actually many women are flexible into their 60's..the key factor for women is puberty, but because they suddenly gain weight and have hips, breasts, etc...then the strength can't keep up with those differences. Gymnastics is a lot tougher on the body and requires much more strength than any other female sport...
I have known of male gymnasts who still compete in their 30's and early 40's ...Mark Rothesberger was one of them.

If I had children I would encourage them (when they are very young) to take up gymnastics, dance or martial arts. As they got older then I would encourage what ever sport they chose...if they were so inclined. These three choices would give them the best base for later years.

When I was stilling competing I would read and study anything I could my hands on about sport and strength training...even now, after 32 years in the iron game, I have a million questions on how to do better. Anyway...one of the things I'd come across was that some of the eastern block countries were manipulating the diets of their female gymnasts to keep them from moving into puberty. This kept them from developing hips, breasts etc.

Speaking of athletics...I have a two hour session ahead of me this morning and should get my butt into Golds. I also have to meet a young man who is interested in competing...he has all the potential in the world and I think he'll be worth the time to mentor (I rarely mentor) He approached me because I told him once that I'm old, old school...LOL, classically trained...and he wants to learn the basics from the ground up.

That's horrible that they would do that to their diets, etc.
Glad there's not so much pressure for unhealthy acts here in the states.

You are correct in saying that gymnastics, dance, and martial arts are the best "core" body training skills your body can learn.
I hope I have a little girl one day that will be a gymnast...I'll give the boys back!

The image was a fun experiment using a light source from my walk in closet and with my camera set outside my bedroom door. The shutter speed was so slow that every little movement added to the ghostly feel of the image. I was very surprised by the end result

Interesting effect! How did you do that? did you move while self-timer was on? or did you dance?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

pfister In reply to crystalfeather [2006-12-08 03:34:57 +0000 UTC]

LOL...no, no dancing. The effect was discovered by accident. The shutter remained open for so long that I decided to set up another shot. Of course when I moved a 'double exposure' effect was created...other enhancements were done in Photoshop.
