yes well you did well with it. very dark and even. also, this drawing is a great example for me of how to draw grass.

oh. grass...seems so simple until you have a field of it to draw.
but really the process is surprisingly similar to drawing fur.
just finding the dark places between the light places.

that's a good way to look at it. I've struggled with it and just need to practice more.

This is an exceptional drawing, and I'll tell you why I think so. The background is interesting and unusual for a horse drawing, and you didn't hide the flaw of the horse- a lot of people would have filled out the flesh around the ribs. Secondly, the horse is walking but there is still determination on that horse's face that tells you they are moving with a purpose. At the walk, this horse looks quite elegant. I love the contrast between shades, especially the grass to the background and the markings on the horse itself. Beautiful.

Thanks so much, a lovely and thoughtful/thought-provoking comment.
I like the challenge of backgrounds and the opportunity to explore
more variety of form, light and texture they potentially provide.
Sometimes get in over my head with them though...I remember thinking
a field of grass should be easy....
this is a drawing of my old mare before she was an old mare. For me I
don't care to idealize subjects in my work. I like the images to feel familiar,
what we see when we look out our windows or walk into the field every day.
Thanks again, I very much appreciate your time and interesting remarks.
