Description I decided to try my hand at painting Chris Hemsworth aka Mr. Thor since his face is so interestingly asymmetrical and bloody hard to draw. Throughout the painting process, I had to make several minor adjustments, like making his chin smaller. It's good practice though -- really makes the eye see what's there. And of course, the two different light sources really helped me learn and understand colors and light better.

The reference photo is from [link] by photographer Michael Muller. He has short hair in it, but I painted him as Thor because his expression and pose reminded me of a strong, resolute warrior, i.e. hero.
Grayscale WiP is here:

Done with Photoshop CS5 and Wacom Intuos 4. Thanks for viewing.

DISCLAIMER: Thor belongs to Marvel and Disney.

I like it very much, you shouldn't be so harsh to yourself Though I know how it feels

Thanks. Most of the time, I feel like I'm just blundering around during the process, hoping whatever comes out is actually good, not delusionally good.

I like how you took the creative liberty to make his hair longer. I never would have known he had short hair in the reference picture unless you said so!

Thanks. Figuring out the shading for blonde hair with two different light sources without real reference ... ack!

Did your ovaries go mmmmmmm btw?

This is going to sound silly, but getting the rest of his beard drawn really helped. And the shading for both lights looks great

Rayn3ll In reply to racerxonclar [2013-02-06 16:52:15 +0000 UTC]

Looks more like him now? So it's all about the facial hair. I didn't do the beard in grayscale because I thought it would just confuse the coloring process.

Thanks.

I always feel insecure when I upload a new deviation -- I critique myself very harshly. Then, after a while, I chill out and be all c'est la vie.
