Description For Miburohunter929. (I don't know if he has a DA account.) Unlike my other gift-swords, I was actually asked to make this. But since I like the guy and got free hands regarding the design, I thought it would be fun.

This here's a "Großes Messer", or Grosse Messer, which was a two-handed, falcion-like cutting sword mostly used by European commoners throughout the 14th, 15th and 16th centuries, as it was a relatively inexpensive weapon that still packed a ferocious cutting power. ( [link] ) Some claim these swords have cut people in half, and comparisons to the Japanese katana are often made.

Obviously, I've taken some liberties with the design, incorporating a lot of oriental or plain fantasy elements; notably the extra pronged blade on the back. I considered not adding it, since it's mostly just for show and giving the sword that half corny, half badass look. But then I remembered who the sword was intended for and kept it.

It's also kinda oversized. I'm not sure if you can tell with these pictures, but this is a huge sword. Not unrealistically huge, of course, but still pretty huge.

Due to the size of the image the Full View is slightly downsized. Download for a closer look.

That's an interesting and unique design for a sword, but what is the bit on the flat of the blade near the hilt for?

That's a really sleek design. I highly enjoy it! Will you be forging this thing in real life? THAT would be a treat to see! <3

At the moment I'm not forging anything. It would be pretty fun to make these things for real, though. (I've half decided to do Kairos, at least, so who knows?)

Impressive.

Most Impressive. You know have the honor of being my first (And possibly, only) comment.

Know, this is gonna be difficult, since I've never been one for praising those who are not me, but I'll try, this once.

Your skills are transcendent, and without equal or peer. I thank you for the creation of my weapon.

Also: I shall use this to split the skulls of the fools who oppose me.

I wonder if the extra blade would be useful on the other side, so that you could press against the blunt side of the blade to thrust the smaller blade into a glancing slash.

There probably are techniques that can make use of it, but mostly stuff like that are considered undesirable due to practical reasons. (Construction of the blade becomes MUCH more difficult, for example, not to mention maintainance and weight/balance issues.)

Oh yeah. See, normally you hammer out a rough blade out of a big piece of steel and grind it into a desired shape. With something like this, you'd have to hammer out a second, smaller blade on the side, which is really, really tricky.

That's why you can be sure that pretty much all fantasy swords with funny shapes have been cut out of a larger piece, rather then forged.

Venaeli In reply to RelativelyBest [2007-07-16 03:09:09 +0000 UTC]

Well, can't you create a slot in the big piece and attach the smaller one separate?

I suppose it's not impossible, but it's bound to end up much weaker. It would be far easier to simply build it into the hilt or something.

By the way, my hand is causing me trouble again, so you might have to wait a while longer for your sword. I hope you don't mind.
