Description It fascinates me how we are conditioned by the society we live in to form judgements on simple things based on rhetoric, we automatically take second hand information as verbatim, and it surprises me how many people don't question information, or keep open minded about situations, you can take a mundane subject, and depending on your upbringing, geological location, conditioning, have a completely different take on what you see, before you think I'm going all political, I want to say what prompted this image (apart from lack of sleep and lager), I've been getting into big brother again, sad as hell I know, but I'm pretty addicted to seeing how humans react to each other, the enclosed environment accentuates what we all do on a daily basis, and damn, I'm hooked, terrifying how easily the human psyche is manipulated

About the image, far from my best, it's a pretty simple looking portrait, didn't take me a great deal of time to do, but it's packed with contradictions, well, not contradictions, but it could be viewed differently quite easily depending on who's viewing it, I'm not going to prompt any views on it, but put it out there as a message to anyone viewing to recognise the slant that you automatically put upon it, and question it, and instill that into how you view other things around you too, keep open minded, and don't believe everything you see/hear, try to form judgements loosely, and based on personal experience rather than distortions of fact, if we all do that, the world would be a much better place.

Not really, I tend to favour cloaks and hoods a lot as they add more mystery, not a fan of pinup art and don't like to objectify women in my work but there's no real reason behind it (well besides the fact I'm usually painting my wife), dunno, I tend to want to portray my female characters with strength and grace, rather than try to engage the teenage boy demographic

"and don't like to objectify women in my work" - those words caught my eye.
I know it may not be a big deal for you, but I don't see the body, of both men and women, as "objectifying" in any way.

So you're saying, paint more boobies?

neither do I, I just choose not to paint titilating imagery, personal choice, not sure if my wife would be too happy about me painting naked ladies, there's no deep meaningful personal beliefs there really

I love the open space in the background, the stormy sky... There is a hint of turbulence to the piece, and yet a sense of calm. Very lovely.

Beautiful piece and well executed. I really liked the comment and echo your thoughts. A greater percentage of the world's population take their opinions for fact which is uneducated more often than not but worse is that this ignorance is masked with arrogance and a steadfast mindlessness that is downright scary. What the thinker thinks, the prover proves As we think so it is! The length that humanity will go to justify its actions boggles the imagination imo. Thanks for bringing that back to my attention. We forget!

There is no such thing as an open mind. An open mind would just get infected by any random passing idea and no longer have as much room for other ideas. Without a belief in some sort of higher order, this would lead to insanity. No one here truly believes that there is no order to the universe. Many of you believe that higher order to be "luck".

nice work! - & a very interesting comment - i echo the sentiment - i don't mind being watched as long as i can watch the watcher! as for manipulation i have this to say - "anyone who lays their hand on me to govern me is a usurper & a tyrant. i declare them my enemy!"...

I like this, a lot. The idea behind it most of all, and your thoughts, and your approach. But I think it's well executed, too; her expression is fitting. I can see in it some of the worry and sad feeling you express in your description. And the setting, her walking in a desolate landscape... The burning debris are a very good detail, too. Is there any specific symbolism attatched to them?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

spyroteknik In reply to eilidh [2006-06-06 09:47:50 +0000 UTC]

thanks the symbolism is mixed, tried to distance myself from a concept and put in things that could be construed differently, the burka with mouthpiece slipped, flames without seeing the cause, colours that don't conform to the colourwheel, etc, loads of different contradictions, was a weird one

I must say - this is a great piece. I can see how many different cultures would view this. That is what I think makes this so unique - there is no one set perspective that this can show.

I have to get my own two cents in here. This is one of the few pieces that you have done that I don’t find ominous. She is not frightened, or lonely, or angry, just maybe a little tired, fatigued from walking the desert. The ashes in the air welcome her to a fire, a home, a place to sleep. It is a gentle glowing, not harsh, signifying warmth and comfort, not destruction or death. I like it, though I must admit I enjoy the ominous more.

hmm....middleeastern women (thats what Im guessing) without her face cloak on...facing away from a fire. Im not sure what it means. Perhaps moving away from the past of their country. But she seems uneasy about all of this. Are the clouds forming a cross in the background?...hmm im not sure what to think of it all. Great Job.

I don't watch Big Brother, I found it boring - and the easy manipulation of human beings was more annoying, stressful and, to be honest, worrying, to watch, than fascinating.

Then again, I only just finished Sixth Form College. Which means I've had seven years of my life looking at developing human beings and how they react and work through their little society to each other in a six-hour closed environment.

Theres a trance tune I rather like with the lyrics ' how can you sit there watching someone else' - I dont watch big brother - I watch a little of the very first one and got bored (sorry to all th BB fans out there). But keeping an open mind, not believing all you read etc are generally good guidelines for a happy life.

Very Nice image - Im going to have to get the 'cloud render plug in' for my brain -- something I need to work on
