Description This was an attempt to design a fairly believable spaceship.

This craft makes use of antimatter/fusion hybrid propulsion, and the crew compartment is heavily shielded and includes a spinning section to allow for simulated gravity during prolonged flight.

If we could afford to build one... why not amortize the cost and build two ?

This is one of several views in this "series"...

Love the lighting of the flightdeck!

And the thing looks like a beast, with its 'grinning' cargo modules....

My friend, your work should be used as concept to a film or TV show. It's awesome!

You've succeeded brilliantly, this is top notch work, informed and literate - a pleasure to see.

We would have to build something that could make getting to space cheaper first before we can do this.
My thought is, (And from what I've read that NASA has suggested) is that we build an elavator to space first

That's true! The biggest obstacle to space travel is just getting off the earth. If we had an elevator system, large ships could be built in orbit at a fraction of the cost since we wouldn't have to lift all the materials with rockets $$$

Yup Yup, and rockets are like trying to compare the efficiency of someone trying to throw something strait up as apposed to lifting with a pully

Hello!

I am writing you to let you know that you have been featured in my newest dAily Feature Article!

If you have a chance to let some others know about this series that would be great as well.

Best wishes,

Ah, it's nice to see a genuinely realistic spaceship once in a while.

I agree completely! I started this little project after reading on some forum somewhere that "realistic spaceships are boring".

I just couldn't let that one go !!!

line-melte In reply to steve-burg [2010-08-24 22:30:16 +0000 UTC]

Peh, I can see why you wouldn't let that go. It's my opinion that people only think that because they don't understand how realistic things work, or something like that. . .

steve-burg In reply to line-melte [2010-08-24 22:36:44 +0000 UTC]

I think the coolest designs are realistic things that don't yet exist - and showing how they could work

True - that is not always reflected in my quick doodles here - but that's mainly because I'm focusing on the purely pictorial as opposed to the design content.

The best design has a startling shape, that when you see it work - makes you think "Oh, but of course!" It's difficult to achieve that - but worth the effort I think

I agree with this, although it's a shame so many people who try to do this sometimes have little knowledge of what they're illustrating which compromises the art. D:

It is true. Whenever possible, I like to research the subject matter - whether it's space travel, historical period or architectural style - whatever it is. That way, hopefully, at least I have some clue !

Wow, wow, wow. Absolutely fantastic. The hull plate details (the raised bits), are they done with geometry or displacement or bump maps?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

steve-burg In reply to GreyAreaRK1 [2010-08-24 04:49:13 +0000 UTC]

Thanks you!

The hull plates are geometry. I made a smooth-shifted (slightly larger) version of the basic shape, and then sliced it up and extruded the plates back inward (so they would terminate inside the underlying hull shape). Some fixing was necessary to clean up troublesome areas. The plates on the Aries model were made in much the same way.

Thanks very much - I mad that as an exercise to sharpen up my modeling skills. Usually I do 3D stuff in a great rush, and then patch things together in 2D - but I wanted to do a more refined design fully in 3D and I had a small window of time (this was over a year ago)

I rendered various views, and kind of settled in on this one. The nose of the ship is definitely a focal point, but as you can see it's very small when compared with the overall length. It's tricky to find a good angle on something that elongated, I think that's why I decided on finishing multiple views

"2001: a Space Odyssey" is a major inspiration for me. The only thing scarier than how well that movie holds up is how far behind schedule our reality is !
