Description Heinkel HE-111 WW2 German bomber operated by The Commemorative Air Force. This was the only operational Heinkel HE-111 in the world at the time this photo was taken Summer 1995. It was destroyed in an accidental crash in 2003 with 2 crew members lost. Bridgeport Fly-in, Bridgeport Connecticut 1995.

I'm glad you have photos. Technically, it was a Spanish CASA 2111 using Merlins, not Jumos that was modified from a personal transport for Francisco Franco by the CAF.


I had the opportunity to see this plane in New Cumberland Pennsylvania and didn't have a camera, but the memories of looking around into the cockpit and standing in the top gunner's position are still there. .

I remember it being a CASA 2, and if I'm not mistaken, this aircraft was also used on occasion as a personal transport for Francisco Franco. The sound of those Merlins were unmistakable as I also shot some video of it that day. It's a shame it was lost in that accident.

Yep, I was told and also confirmed it years later it was Franco's personal transport for some time. They had to do some modifications to make it look like the bomber, especially internally with the front bomb bay. Perhaps the oddest internal bomb bay ever developed. At the other end, the Lancaster's was very well designed and clever as well as cavernous.
