I like your analysis and I think it's really well thought out. You have some good points.
Now here's mine: The flower is shaped like a heart, which is obviously a symbol of love, so it's like they're offering up their love, or opening up...
Also I think an actual living plant with soil would be a better present than say, a cut rose, because the rose would wilt while the plant would grow and live on. Kind of like how they say true love never dies. Personally, I would be thrilled if someone gave me a potted petunia, but that's just me.
And on the other hand, it's just a symbol of young affection, because you know how little kids will pick dandelions and weeds and things and give them to people as a present. It's cute and rather touching.
