Description So in 2002-2003, I worked as the concept artist of video game startup Damage Studios along with Tony Guntharp , Chris DiBona , and Greg Kucharo among other great folks. We worked on a MMOG called Rekonstruction and had developed some great cutting edge stuff, but only a fraction of what was produced content-wise was ever released as concept-art/renders to the public.

We developed a rather detailed and conceptually dense idea that incorporated a lot of elements (including a very ornate societal framework), which we figured would have made for a highly customizable world. And this is one of the concept illos from it. Since I had to work quickly, many of the character designs were literally referenced from poses in various fashion magazines, clothing catalogs and personal pictures of friends. If some of the poses repeat or seem oddly familar, that is probably why. Many of the drawings are, as you would imagine concept/storyoard art to be...a bit raw. This one was mostly done, I just added some more color and did some digital tweaking.

I had not really thought about this guy in terms of giving him a name, so I settled on Hipparcos because it sounded good and it keeps with my love of semi-obscure pop culture and high culture references; in this case, a European Space Agency satellite used in astronomical measurement.

This fellow is one of the tribal folken who travel about the countryside making merriment, and merriment in this case involves carrying a belt of toxin-flechette grenades and a knife (at least those are the weapons in plain sight).

This actually reminds me slightly of the star wars character, Aurra Sing. Great style to this character.

Is he of the same 'tribe' as Mordokhai? They both have red facial paint...
It seems such a shame that the game wasn't completed. A complicated societal structure sounds very -different-, and would probably make a change from the societal norm of other games (eg: government, military, secret organization/ badguys, and common people).
I like the gear you drew on him... his chestplate reminds me of a barometer for some reason. It looks rather like a needle pointing at teeth on a scale of some sort. It makes for a cool design though.

Not necessarily. Red was the default color we used in the design schema, and many fringe folk had/have them (I have pages and pages of nothing but faces with different patterns). A lot of it was me experimenting with Arabesques and Maori tattoo patterns.

I've heard of the Maori people but the only 'Arabesque' I knew was Debussy's... I didn't know what Arabesque art was so I had to look it up :\ Once I saw it though, it looked familiar.
