Description So in 2002-2003, I worked as the concept artist of video game startup Damage Studios along with Tony Guntharp , Chris DiBona , and Greg Kucharo among other great folks. We worked on a MMOG called Rekonstruction and had developed some great cutting edge stuff, but only a fraction of what was produced content-wise was ever released as concept-art/renders to the public.

We developed a rather detailed and conceptually dense idea that incorporated a lot of elements (including a very ornate societal framework), which we figured would have made for a highly customizable world. And this is one of the concept illos from it. Since I had to work quickly, many of the character designs were literally referenced from poses in various fashion magazines, clothing catalogs and personal pictures of friends. If some of the poses repeat or seem oddly familar, that is probably why. Many of the drawings are, as you would imagine concept/storyoard art to be...a bit raw. This one actually got some editing just to tweak the color a bit.

This is Barron and he is not the local kindergarten teacher. I tried to give names to almost everyone I designed, sometimes in a tone I thought suited their appearance, sometimes named for purely humorous purposes. Barron is named after
I am also aware this is #4 and that I did not yet submit 3. This is because 3 really needs some work (I have this whole sequence thing I started with, so now I am sticking to it. Strycture people, a man of my tendencies needs some structure to keep the calamity factor at bay).

Permission to post came from the former CEO of Damage Studios, Tony Guntharp, aka *

I really like the characters you designed for this game project. This has to be my favourite. I like the tatoos, colours and clothes design.

Wow... looks great!

Great colors and texture... and the red parts in his face gives a great contrast to the white.... sweet

Reminds me of Pinhead from Hellraiser for some reason. Sorry I never have anything constructive/relevant to say.

Sorry I never have anything constructive/relevant to say.

Are you kidding me? Have you seen half the posts in the Forums? Compared to that, the fact that you write in complete sentences makes you look like Proust or Shakespear by comparison.

Well, I think it's safe to say that the internet forum was the death of proper grammar.

Looks sort of like a re-envisioning of the Mad Max universe. I don't know why but my first impression was an updated Toecutter.

The game concept itself incorporated a rather huge and varided social universe, and the idea was to create a rather broad set of roles and subcultures (including more urban, aristocratic castes and the intelligentsia types and many niches). I know at the time I had been re-reading not only the Dune series, but also Herbert's Jesus Incident, Destination: Void and Lazarus Effect books. I had notthought much of Mad Max, but since I enjoyed those movies as a kid, I am sure that colored my visuals as well as things like Bladerunner and every Saturday Morning sci-fi cartoon I had seen between 1975-1989

Before i read your description, i thought to myself "this dude looks like he might be wearing Calvin Klein underware." Not a bad place to get poses (fashion mags). Those guys can really convey attitude with some of their poses.

I really like that your character design shows your personal style as well as your portraits did. it really upsets me that if I browse a gallery of character design, on gfxartist.com for example, most of the works look really beautiful, but they have no "personal touch", they almost look like they're all made by the same person.
this is fabulous!!

I actually initially ran into some resistance at the game startup because I did not do everything purely in cg, which I felt was pointless since (a) the ideas were more critical than the method (since you do not play a 2d static image in a 3d MMOG), and that (b) somehow looking like myself was somehow not bankable. But the whole venture was a brilliant risk that unfortunately did not come to fruition. I kind of want some of the imagery to survive that, since the ideas were very much my own language visually.
