Description I went down to Iowa for four days, just got back today...And personally, I am SICK of drawing Audrey Hepburn now. (Just check how many times I have drawn her recently...! ) But all I had for reference was her biography with a bunch of great pictures, so...Well, I had to draw something.

I love the Ascot scene in My Fair Lady. The clothing was just wonderful. I know that this dress isn't the one she wore there, but it just reminded me so much of it. But I love her expression. It's like a polite, pleasant surprise kinda thing

I tried to do three different types of shading: For the skin and scarf thing, just simple building up tones with the pencil, then cross-hatching on the clothes, and smudging with a tissue paper for the background. But, o f course it's in my sketchbook, so the other pages were rubbing against it, thus smudging all the effort I put into the cross-hatching :/ Oh well.

This was all drawn with a regular mechanical pencil, because I was an idiot and forgot to bring any good drawing materials. And yes, those white blobs in her hat are supposed to be shaded. They're roses; I just didn't feel like shading them in.

Also, drawn on a Strathmore sketch pad, if you're wondering

Just by the way, I'm not wanting to draw things that look like photos anymore. I suppose that's just lost its appeal to me. I've always tried to make my drawings look lie they're photos (my goal had always been to get into an argument on whether I really did draw something, lol!) but I just don't see the point anymore. Of course, I was never that good, so I don't have to worry about that anyway But don't get me wrong; photorealistic drawings are amazing! The technical skill that's required to make something like that...But, I just like drawings to look like drawings, y'know?

Drawings that are so perfect that they're photorealistic are just...they almost feel soulless, artificial. Sketches breathe, they speak...so yeah.

Jus' you wait, 'Enry 'Iggins.

I love My Fair Lady. I had requested it for the next spring musical, but they chose Meet Me In St. Louis instead. *grumble*
I agree with you on the way you think sketches breathe. Sure, photorealism takes time and talent, but if you don't put your all into it, it shows. I guess it also depends on who's drawing it. As if the artist him/herself goes into it.

Aw, lovely. I like your realistic drawing philosophy, it gives some hope to the rest of us, haha.

I think if Audrey was here today, she wouldn't mind all the drawings.

It's good you thought of this. I've met a few people who are just afraid to try a different art style, mainly because of the praise they receive, so they want to continue receiving it by not doing anything new...it's kinda of sad in a way, yet understandable...
I've seen people who made photorealistic, or near photorealistic stuff and turn them into surrealism- so it looks like a photo or similar to one, but it's still surreal or have feeling. That's what I call technical and creative!

thats beautiful! fantastic job!

well, first of all, your drawings are beautiful, and a lot of them i thought were actually pictures, and not drawings.
I dont mean to sound "full of myself," but a lot of people say my drawings look like pictures!!! does that mean my drawings are souless??? *tear*
lolol. but thats beside the point. this pic is really pretty! i like the face the best

Oh, this is lovely! I love how soft it is, and yet it still has nice detail. Uh, I guess since you have advanced critique encouraged, my crits would be that the wrist/hand area looks a little messy and it sorta looks like you just omitted them on purpose, and you could heighten the black/white contrast in some parts.

Thank you Yeah, I did get a little lazy with the hand area. The reference actually cut off somewhere around there, and I was too lazy to improv Now that "m home, I'll be sure to touch it up to add contrast.

Thank you so muc for your critique
