Description I'd really love to illustrate a monster manual type book some day, but in general, fantasy folks are not big fans of the "animated" style, because heaven forbid, elves shooting lightning out of their hands while riding giant dragonflys should ever look unrealistic. For me, it's impossible to picture the world of 4E in any realistic manner, especially since EVERY attack has a name that almost demands to be screamed out when used, like some kind of weaboo cartoon character.

Yeesh, don't know where that venom came from. Ignore all that. I just wanted to draw some distinct kobolds, toss some character and variation into the looks of one of my favorite D&D critters.

Really like the cartoony style on this one, especially the blue kobold with the knives.

I think your concept of a cartoon-like D&D are great. Have you ever thought about making a game, like a casual type of game using your great fantasy art?

I personally love your cartoony style. Whoever says it's unnappropiate probably never got over the fact that they are playing a game, and that is probably haunted by the ghost of 'games are for kids.' This kind of artwork tells you a lot about a character, while still leaving some good bits for imagination... and it adapts to anything! In the sense that it could be just as good for silly game, as for bloody gruesome ones, if that's what rocks your boat. And I agree with you on 4E, 100%. Keep making this stuff! I love it, and if you don't mind, I'm going to use a lot of it for my online rping!

thank you for making kobolds that are interesting! I see to many that just look like gnome+lizardman, or halfing+lizardman hybrids who are unthreatening and uninteresting. its good to see them look, cool, for once

Personally I think the reason why a monster manual in this style wouldn't be well-received is because these guys look too awesome to ruthlessly murder for XP.

What kind of an RPG is it? Is it a setting for an existing game? Or is it a whole new game rule set? Because if its something you intend to publish, there's always kickstarter

It's an original game with a modified version of the system used in L5R and 7th Sea. And I've thought about the Kickstarter thing. But, I want to finish writing it before I look into art.

Love these. Everyone has their different takes on what kobolds look like don't they? I'm not sure when the whole lizardy thing came about. I used to see them with more of a doglike aspect long ago.

Still love the style on fantasy stuff, and totally agree it should be done this way.

Makes me think of my old character. It was in 3.5E and the dm allowed me to use an Avatar suppliment so I made an Earth Bender Kobold. He was also a sand dragon dragonwrought kobold just for flavor. He wasn't a min-maxed character but boy did he have his moments in the spotlight. hehehe.

PS, I love your kobold works and i love the cartoony animated feel to them. They need to inspire a tv show or something because it would be amazing.

Cool! I really like these guy's designs! You did a really, really awesome job drawing them! For some reason these guys remind me of the 1st Pokemon starters. The one on the left reminds me a bit of Charmeleon while the one on the middle DEFINITELY reminds me of Venusaur but without the gigantic flower.

chief-orc In reply to Groudan383 [2012-09-26 18:12:50 +0000 UTC]

What? You don't know what kobolds are?
Kobolds are generally low-level sword fodder monsters in just about any fantasy rpg. Their design is kinda open-ended, in German folklore, I think they are goblin-like, also in early editions of D&D, they were gobliny-gremlin things. Other games have them as rodent or dog-like. In 3E, 3.5 and 4E they've become tiny dragon-like humanoids, and that is the kind of kobold I was drawing here.
Just google kobold, you'll be able to find all kinds of pic.

anime-underdog [2012-09-26 02:54:51 +0000 UTC]

There's a lot of people that want there fantasy to be realistic don't they? Personally I actually prefer an animated style over a realistic one, although I sometimes feel I'm the only one that wants it. For example, did you know Shadowrun is getting a new computer game? There's going to be a new PC RPG based in the Shadowrun universe, and it's coming out next year. When concept art surfaced onto the internet for the first time, people praised the backgrounds for being authentic to the setting...but the "cartoony" look needed to go.

It kind of sucks that I was lumped with a group of people that liked the style, against a majority that hated it. While I think the styalized look is staying (IMO it should) people are still insisting that it be more gritty and realistic. Personally I would have loved to have seen Shadowrun try a new art style, but oh well, at least I'll be able to make a Troll Shaman now at least.

Sorry about the long comment, I tend to get carried away sometimes. Great work on the Kobolds man, keep up the good work.

Eh that's okay, I'm just happy I'm getting a new Shadowrun game. Besides, I think some of the style is still in the game, just a bit more gritty.

4E kobolds are too little for longbows, so you may need to houserule that one.

ChapterAquila92 In reply to chief-orc [2012-09-26 16:35:47 +0000 UTC]

In v3.5, longbows can be made for small creatures just like any other weapon. They have the same range as longbows made for medium creatures, but use a d6 for damage instead of a d8.
