While he is not a grouch, Arata does tend ot fall into some moments where he is extremely irritable. It is mostly brought on by unpleasant memories or when he is under a lot of stress. However, he is under stress often, so it seems that Arata is always in a bad mood. During conversations, he shows very little interest which is due to his stoic expressions and his disability to pay attention for long periods of time. He doesn't like to be so distracted all the time, but Arata's mind moves fast as he always seems to find something new to write about so he keeps a watch out for anything interesting. His stoic expressions and blunt words are just a part of him which he never grew out of. He likes to keep things short and precise, which is part of his perfectionist nature.
Arata cannot stand slacking, and he makes sure to give all his energy into whatever he is doing. He believes that doing something is worth doing right. It almost seems as if he is making up for something with all his hard work. Because of his hard work ethic, he likes to make sure everything is perfect, which he finds himself disappointed most times as he cannot even please himself. His perfectionist attitude often comes with self-loathing as he believes he cannot do anything right except write. Arata is afraid of failure, and even if he has done well up until now, he feels as if his life is a little bit empty. He cares immensly about everything and everyone even if it doesn't seem that way. Despite his seemingly cold attitude, he hopes that the little things he does for others will show how much he appreciates the people in his life.

Biography:
Arata grew up in a small town in Japan where he lived a normal life. He was quiet and shy as a child, but he still managed to make friends. Growing up had its fair share of challenges though. His parents were strict on him, not allowing him to have much free time because they wanted him to study hard and become successful. He wasn't very appreciative of this, but he still did what he was told. He could only really confide in his friends even if they couldn't provide him with anything but support.
He did fall in love with one of his childhood friends, Nara, who was his biggest support. She lived right next door to him, and she was very easy to fall in love with (according to Arata). Nara was kind, beautiful, and intelligent. Arata got along with her from the very beginning, and they began to date at the beginning of high school. Nara was Arata's main source of inspiration for his writings. He would write poems and stories about her although she would never know. She was the reason why he wanted to become a writer, but of course, he knew his parents would never approve. Nevertheless, he still wanted to try because he had a passion for writing, and he found no other career that was able to showcase his talents.
When he entered Tokyo University, Nara followed. His parents were suspicious of why his childhood friend had to follow him to university. A few months into university, Arata told his parents that he planned to pursue a career in writing, and his parents grew furious at him. They believed that Nara was the source of his ridiculous career plan, and they told Arata upfront that they would not approve of any sort of relationship between the two for any longer. He no longer stood there and accepted their words, and instead Arata told his parents that he would continue to pursue the things and person he loved most.
He married Nara the following year and continued to study literature. After graduating from college, they moved to the Munona Apartments. They had struggled for a little bit since getting published is not an easy task, but the two managed to create popular children stories together before moving on to independent projects. After three years of marriage, Nara grew sick and was unable to work as efficiently as she used to. Over the year, she grew more and more ill, and Arata had to take on another job to take care of the hospital bills. Everything became too much all at once, and Nara died on Christmas Eve.
Arata has not moved on since then, and he continues to write about his late wife in his novels.
