Description (2010), 9"x12", pencil on paper.

We're finally getting a steady trickle of pictures from the upcoming Harry Potter movie, and I was thrilled to see a glimpse of the infamous meeting at Malfoy Manor, presumably a few heart-beats before Snakey buys it. Lucius already looks as if he'd rather crawl into that crack between the table planks he's fingering nervously and Draco tries not to be seen at all...

So of course I had to draw my favorite bunch of Death Eaters while giving in to my own spleen of re-casting Narcissa and Bellatrix the way I always pictured them from the books. It was fun drawing all the different textures of fabric and the semi-reflective surface of the polished oak table.

Thanks so much! I don't want to say I dislike the eventual casting in the movies, but for these two figures I really had a different mental image of what they would look like from the books.

Thank you! It was so weird, I actually saw Claudia Black as Bella from the first moment I read about her in the books, and the image just hasn't gone away...

i didnt actually recognise her as an actress but after looking her up you're so right! hbc is amazing and im happy with her peformance and everything but bella looks a lot more like ms.black (how perfect is that??) in my mind.

I'm glad you agree. I also think HBC was awesome, but the books make Bella look somewhat stern, cruel and powerful looking and Helena brings something of a cracked porcelain doll feel to the character which I think JKR hadn't written for her.

izclark In reply to Ellygator [2013-08-08 03:41:24 +0000 UTC]

yeah, i think in the books bella was very much the hollowed remnants of what she used to be - beautiful in a harsh way, cruel and demanding and proud, and very sensual, i imagine - mixed with a bit of insanity and sadism, but still focused. hbc is just what you say, a cracked porcelain doll, a bit too crazy and flighty and as a result shes less disturbing. but tbh its the hair that bothers me, its so different to how it was descibed :L

Honestly I think I didn't want where it was from; the reason because I like it is the static vision, the silent heavy atmosphere, the eyes directions... ...feeling what they are thinking about...
And if this comes from a movie, well, after all I hope "I can see what I want to see", right?
Great!

Your portrayal of Bellatrix reminds me a lot of the actress who played Drusilla in both Buffy and Angel.
The reflective surface on the tablet is beautifully done.
Poor, poor Draco... wishing he was anywhere but there, watching Charity revolving above the table.

Thank you! Actually I just watched a bunch of the old Buffy series, and I agree. In fact Juliet Landau would have made another terrific Bella.

You're very welcome!
It wouldn't have been a difficult transition for Juliet to pull off a
convincing Bellatrix; Drusilla was barking mad as well! Maybe not as
mad as Bellatrix, but she certainly wasn't playing with a full deck.

StephaniePride [2011-07-24 06:00:44 +0000 UTC]

I've gotta say, I prefer your versions of Narcissa and Bellatrix to the film versions, (even if your Narcissa is you) Film Narcissa just looks... too old. She looks like she's Lucius's Mother, not his wife! and Bellatrix is too cartoonish, I'd Say that was because of Helena B-C but I've seen The Kings Speech. She can tone it down when she wants to. It must be the hair... for every role she acts to match her hair.
You've made them look like sisters too! That's another strike against the films, they don't look like they could possibly be related.

Is your version of Bellatrix based on Drusilla from the Buffy-verse? There's a definite resemblance.

Ellygator In reply to StephaniePride [2011-07-24 13:40:30 +0000 UTC]

Thank you! I am glad my versions of the Black sisters jive with you. I heard stories that Helen McCrory was originally cast as Bellatrix, and I think that would have worked better, age-wise. Now she looks like Bella's older sister... Plus they really botched her hair with that two-tone style.

"My" Bellatrix is based on Claudia Black, who to me can project the kind of aristocratic haughtiness and coldness at times that I see in Bella. The woman is maybe crazy, but not in that cracked porcelain-doll madness that HBC has about her in this role, more like a cold, sadistic viciousness that sees everyone around her as inferior to herself and her master.

Excellent work Elly (as usual, but i'll never stop repeating it), Love face expresions, all are telling their story. And WOW for your Bella! HBC is great actress, but she is rather ridiculous than scary in movies, not close to book character (as iimagined it)

Fantastic job on this! And hurray for the characters as you see them. I adore Jason Isaacs not because he's how I saw Lucius but because of his carriage and enthusiasm. But what were the film makers thinking when they cast Bellatrix and especially, Narcissa?! And hello, wigs or hair dye please!

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Ellygator In reply to werewolfsfan [2011-02-20 14:16:51 +0000 UTC]

Thank you! I am glad some folks agree with me on the odd casting choices for the Black sisters.

I love HBC (like in pretty much all Burton movies or in Fight Club), but as Bella she brings too much of a cracked porcelain doll vibe to the role. "My" Bella would have you pee your pants just from looking at her - there'd be just a focused intent will to evil, no frills...

And Narcissa is just fine as she was described in the books, blond, straight, long hair and a mix of arrogance and fragility (I think JKR compares her to a drowned corpse one time, but her repartee with Harry in Mrs. Malkins is witty, mean and spirited). Also, why should Lucius have married the youngest Black sister when she looks like she could be Bella's mother? I wasn't looking for a trophy wife, but at least get something about her right...
