In my opinion, Rouge's Challenge was a serious disservice to Cutter's character. I can't imagine what the hell the writers were thinking! Everyone (even the damn Preservers) is murderously out of character in this issue, and even Rayek states early on in the fight why this doesn't work and why this is OOC for Cutter. We see him stomping around and throwing rocks in a stone-age temper tantrum. He's an elf not a gorilla!!! He even gloats about how he just fractured Rayek's rib and seems more then content in strangling him in front of everyone. This is the same character that wanted Greymung's death to be quick and clean, despite all of the things the old bastard did to his kind! Yet now he is 100% opposite of this and is all but sadistic. I know Cutter was pissed at Rayek and he has every right to be, but they're breaking point should have ended with them having a similar fight like Strongbow and Cutter had after Cutter let the humans who stumbled into Sorrows End leave alive: a mental battle of pure sending. Rayek could have started out by letting Cutter know that Cutter himself was the one who started their grudge match by straight up raiding his home and trying to carry off Leetah. Cutter could have countered by saying it was Rayek's bruised ego that prevented the 3 of them from having a shared relationship, and so on. It should have ended with them beating each other up mentally since the mind is capable of being a more powerful weapon then fists. That would have been more in tune with what Elfquest is, its tone, and how the characters think and react to things. I can't imagine why they chose to have the issue just have them pile-driving each other onto stalagmites. I'd go as far as saying this is a disgrace to the series and its stopped me from reading the series and now I flat out hate it!

Wonderful calendar art. I rarely saw that contrast between young Cutter and already adult Skywise. Same for nightfall. Overall a very joy- and colourful picture that I like. Thanks Sga... sorry Eregyrn.

Thanks very much! You're right, we don't often get to see pictures of Skywise as an adult but while Cutter and Nightfall are still kids. That was one of the things I thought would be fun about choosing to do this moment.

Yeah, it reminds me a bit of the type of coloring that the original versions of the OQ had. It's very old-school comic coloring (although I don't handle shadows as well), rather than a more modern, subtle, dramatic take on coloring.

Yeah -- the problem of "who's looking at what?" is the major flaw of this picture. As I usually do, I drew all of the figures separately and then put them all together as linework to color. So they were all drawn larger than this, and in the original drawing, I think Joyleaf's eyes look a little more properly like they're looking at Cutter... but it didn't quite come out when it was reduced. Really, I should have started from scratch with her eyes, and made them more drastically closed slits -- then she would have looked more like she was looking down. Really, of all of the figures, Joyleaf is the one in this piece that makes me go "urgh". If I had it to do over, I would do something almost entirely different with her. Don't like her face or expression overall. Should have done her interacting with Bearclaw a bit more.
On the other hand, Longbranch is, on purpose, the only one who isn't looking at Cutter. I kind of intended him to be looking at his daughter, but it works if it seems like he's looking at both his daughter and his mate. I figured that, as a father, he would be most taken with Nightfall's obvious enthusiasm.

Thanks! Yeah, I find Longbranch intriguing. Brownberry too. We just know so little about them and have seen them say or do so little! Even after Wolfrider! filled in some of the blanks. I really liked the way Longbranch came across in that series. He's obviously old, and he seems like a nice, deadpan foil for Bearclaw.

I would love it if, after they get done with Final Quest (whenever the heck THAT will be), if they'd maybe produce a volume of short-stories from earlier time periods, just to explore some of those little-used characters. Of course, I know that's what "Wolfrider!" was, and to be honest, I'd like such a future project to differ from that one by [a] not being quite so dark and angsty, and [b] featuring more art by Wendy and less by artists whose work I would charitably say isn't suited to telling ElfQuest stories. But, I have a feeling that's a major pipe-dream. I have no idea if they intend to do ANY more EQ stories after they finish Final Quest.
