Description This is a scene from a fic I wrote. It takes place 11 years after the events in Skyrim and features Katarina, Thane of Haafingar, at the Blue Palace, during a grand feast thrown in honor of High Queen Elisif's birthday. She and the queen's new steward Dorian Valtieri meet on the balcony and end up having an unexpectedly philosophical discussion. Hence the title.

(Below follows a short excerpt)

"Oh, the burdens we must carry!" he exclaimed theatrically for effect, "Think of how many people would say our lives are, in fact, simple".

"Many people are fools."

"Perhaps, but I've met many more happy fools than wise men. Perhaps ignorance truly is bliss."

Kate scoffed openly and took a long sip of wine, wondering where he was going with this.

"That's just something the weak-minded say to shield themselves from a truth they cannot handle."

"So you don't think some things are best left unknown?"

"Only through understanding can any problem be solved; knowing a trap exists is the first step in evading it."

"Of course", Valtieri slyly pointed out, "that is only predicated on the idea that free will exists, that we have a choice at all and our actions are not being dictated by a higher power, guiding us to our inevitable destiny. Someone like you, Dragonborn, should understand better than most."

Kate arched a skeptical brow, lips twisted into a sardonic smile. Her wine cup was empty, she saw with a hint of annoyance.

"There is always a choice", she told him in a tone that permitted no argument "I could have chosen not to face Alduin but we would not be here now had I done so."

Thank you & for the brushes I used to draw the leaves and vines, and & for the stone textures.

WOW, that is some beautiful detail!! The latice-work in the ledges, the edge of her sleeve...her hair! :U I know how much effort you put into the background, but for the amazing job you do...TOTALLY WORTH IT.

Also, I can't wait to read this story!

Thank you! The background was a pain and more than once I was tempted to take a shortcut >.> <.< but I'm glad I didn't in the end.
