uhm hm dunno how it looks.My first tutorial o: or ' tips' of how i color my drawings from a gray scale.
Using photoshop cs5 and wacom bamboo tablet
Used only standard brushes.
D; I draw and color intuitiv. So try new things with the blending modes. Ew can't find any words today. xD let me edit it later.

Oh wow this just blew my mind. It took a while playing around in photoshop to understand the gist of it (I'm a photoshop noob even after all this time), but it works like a dream. My technique has been so awkard I just ended up slapping one colour under greyscale or skipping the greyscale altogether & doing straight colour (it looks terrible). Now I'll be able to take my greyscale art & colour it to my hearts content without ruining it.

thanks ^-^ I kinda experimented since the time i made this tutorial. For exemple if u add above the overlay layer a divide layer it gives you nice blurred bluish colors or if you do darken green color it adds this kind of old paintings style. Best way is to do the color layer+ overlay and then add bunch of other layers to see how it changes

Truth be told I'm trying to keep it simple. I get pretty confused by all the different layer modes & stuff. I'm still a photoshop noob. I did happen to discover a neat trick though. If you're interested in having multiple colours on separate layers, say one for eye colour, hair colour etc (I initially tried this & the colours all blended together), don't set the layer mode to overlay, leave them as normal. Then simply take your separate colour layers, put them in a folder & set the folder mode to overlay. The colours will overlay everything underneath the folder without blending together.

^-^ woa, If you would ever see how do i paint. I don't even set a lineart or single color neither use eraser. Same with colors. I was taught to paint fast with large brushstrokes and over paint the stuff i don't like. ;-; I even don't keep things in folders or name layers. Messy everyhere XD Is how I am in real too.

I try that technique when I'm doing greyscale stuff without lines. My problem is I try to be too detailed & perfect. I spend way to much time fixing every little thing. It makes it impossible to finish anything. That's why I'm playing around with lineart at the moment. I can be pixel perfect with the lines then splash out a bit with slightly rougher shading. It's fun for a change.

Wow that does look like fun. I like doing stuff like that traditionally. You can do really great pen sketches where the image really takes on a life of it's own because you cannot erase. It's just I get caught up in how much control you can get with digital art. I do want to branch out more though. I might have to give that a go myself.

Niby znam te tryby warstw, ale zawsze pracuję tak strasznie bałaganiarsko i naprawdę fajnie zobaczyć coś co szybko pokazuje, jak pokolorować te obrazki i zamknąć się w zaledwie kilku warstwach.
Swoją drogą mam pytanie, czemu nie należy zostawiać białych miejsc?

białego używaj na końcu do blików, ewentualnie tła. Czysty biały nie zawsze nakłada się z 'overlay'.

I like to use the gradient maps too, more or less the same way you use the warm solid color.

well still testing. Way easier for me to add color. was doing similar with acrylics but the other way. first color then i was adding grays till the prof yelled at me >.> that's how i started to hate painting.

I like painting and I find it sorta easier than doing digitals. And evermind what teachers say, you can learn a lot by trial-and-error too.

i actually loved to use dirty water for my acrylics :I All arts were gloomy and watercolor -like xD I had really bad times with that guy. I had to ask the principal of my uni if I can switch to other class.
