If it is a deer, then it might not be unusual to possess a horn instead of an antler, and here's why:
It’s typical for snakes and spiders to kill its prey via venom, but two families of mammals, the platypus and the shrew, also have venom glands in their bodies. It’s typical for amphibians and insects to be poisonous, but one type of tropical bird, the pitohui (pronounced PIH-toh-HOO-ee) of New Guinea, wears a plumage of feathers powdered with poison that can irritate a predator on contact. It’s typical for birds and mammals to be warm-blooded, but the iconic Great White Shark, a predatory fish, also has a body temperature that is higher than the surrounding water. That explains why this hunter can be found as far north as the freezing seas off the coast of Alaska.

You know, I think that this is a nice idea (never heard of the red faced ones...except for indian unicorns), but I came up with another species being like deer.
I image that male Kirins bellow like the red deer stags, or all male unicorns do it (though I think of them as being their own breed, but all the versions related, the Western, the European, and the Eastern).
Just one question that I been trying to figure out...how do they fight with just one horn...I mean I can get how a rhino can, and deer and antelope...but how do two male unicorns fight?
I came up with maybe they box like deer hinds and stags in velvet (with their hooves),
what do you think?

I agree, I was at first a little...offput by their fierce appearance (being more dragon in them), but I think they are okay...just is they aren't made too much.
I would suggest looking at Narwhals, but they are kind of limited. The horn thing has been what I thought though.
Box with their hooves (probably sharper) and use the horn as either a display or last resort (probably could get a good chase with a Manticore if it was young and foolish).
I kind of view the unicorns as their own species...they look like horses, deer, or antelope, but I don't think they really belong to either group, just their own species with subspecies depending on where they live.

Thats OK, my Unicorns are partly modeled on reindeer. The two could be a related species, but as long as it looks somewhat like a unicorn than that's good.

yeah I like the idea and that you have been studying, what you wrote was quite interesting I have not actually looked into myself but this does intrigue. After reading what you wrote I think you did a very good recreation it sounds very true to the concept. Well done

Thanks, I've been researching mythical creatures for years and have books of heaps of little facts compiled together over time. Some creatures I have deemed to have existed while some I have even been able to dismiss as being misinterpretations of another animal.

awesome yeah I'd be the same, My study was more of the feline variety though, I just researched various cat breeds I haven't really looked into any mytholigical aspects of the cat (though I know that they are renown in Egypt and I would guess to natives who are from locations where cats are) it would be a bit interesting to look into though...
