Description I've wanted to draw a Hetalia fanart based on what I've experienced of Spain before and during World Youth Day in Madrid ever since I came back from it less than two months ago.

My experience during my pilgrimage around Spain was heartfelt; it was such a passionate country, full of raw emotions. Joy, love, pain, anger... everything was vibrant, vivid. The colours, sounds, art, it was all loud, proud and out there. Yet it was also a place of history, with stories of glorious triumph and agonising defeat, of war and bloodshed.

Religion, specifically Catholicism, is a huge part of Spain's history and culture. And by goodness, it shows. Particularly in the veneration and devotion to the Virgin Mary.

"Dios te salve, Maria" is the Spanish equivalence of "Hail Mary", and is one of the most important prayers of the Catholic Church. The Rosary is the most holy of all the prayers dedicated to Mary. I would imagine that during times of national hardship, it would be a much-prayed prayer.

So, finally got this out on paper and then coloured. Mouse-colouring sure takes a while, but I got it done over two or three days, with a substantial amount of trial-and-error.

Experimented with mouse-painting onto background colour. Played a little with colour theory (my first time. I know it's not great). Tried out a simplistic sort of composition I haven't really used before. Made the difficult decision of cutting off his ponytail. Had fun with blood.

Thanks for the intense and absolutely inspiring experience, Spain. Truly the Country of Passion. You make me want to cry. In the best ways.

Lineart here .

Axis Powers Hetalia and its associated characters belong to Himaruya Hidekaz.

This looks awesome, but I probably would have missed the rosary had you not mentioned it. It's almost hidden in the darkness, which actually is kind of a cool effect.

Lots of playing with lighting on this one. I guess you see things when you look more closely?
Anyway I need to do something like this once I'm back in the country. Been having so many thoughts about Germany, Austria and Poland...
Thanks!

Aww thanks so much! I'm hoping that there'll be a Brazil character by the time I come back from WYD'13 at Rio, God willing.

I know I suck and this is probably due to the whole revival of our spazzing, but the first thing that came to my mind was, "LEAR?!"

Then I realised it wasn't him and -_-"-ed. Ahem.

He looks a little oddly hunched, as far as actual useful critique goes, but I like the darkness of the general colour scheme. For some reason, I keep getting an image of Phillip, crumbled in his very very painful defeat in the English coast. And then I look at his bloody axe--yes, I'm sure you had fun doing the edges. I actually really like that bit.

Must be my mood. Good job anyhow! *cheer*

I'm personally from a certain diocese from SE Australia and we did a week-long pilgrimage before the WYD week, starting from Barcelona, to Manresa/Montserrat, Lourdes, San Sebastian, Loyola, Pamplona, Logrono, Burgos, and finally Madrid. We had a group of 40 pilgrims and went around in small groups of 5, but at the end of it all the 40 of us got very close! It was an experience like no other!

Praying for you with regards to WYD'13 (it'll be in mid-July) in Rio! Hope I can make it too; it'll be the last year of my thesis but if God wills it I'll be able to make it!

...right now im just blown away by the fact that your from Australia (what do you expect from an American...)...if only you could see my face and thoughts when i read you went to all those places, i dont know how to describe it but i think youll find it to be very funny

and thank you so much...thesis? and i have faith God has already got the travel plans ;D

Does it help if I told you also that I went backpacking with two mates for a fortnight-long extended pilgrimage in Italy and visited five cities (and visited Frankfurt for two days while we're at it)?

Actually the Americans there seem to love us Aussies (and we love them back. They were really nice!). I literally had one girl (from Chicago?) come up to me and go, "OMG you're Australian! Say something! I love your accent!"

๐Ÿ‘: 0 โฉ: 1

nobodyelseXV In reply to Ophelion [2011-11-03 23:15:29 +0000 UTC]

YOU.ARE.AMAZING!!!
that is the most comprehensible thing i can say

*hugs* yea we luv you, we almost always luv everyone, depends on certain things yknow, kinda in depth stuff...but anyways yea if we meet non-american, most likely the reaction will be quite similar, were suckers for accents but for some reason were not very fond of our own diverse actions...all i know is that i apparently speak with an inland north accent i think its called? and there are some accents here that make me twitch and some that make me get a big grin

๐Ÿ‘: 0 โฉ: 1

Ophelion In reply to nobodyelseXV [2011-11-03 23:22:03 +0000 UTC]

I think I MAY have disappointed the girl since my accent isn't of the broad (or as we call it, Bogan) variation (think Croc Hunter) but just the general one. Which is more along the lines of... take the general British accent, drawl it a bit, not enunciate as many consonants as possible while enunciating all the o's. And nickname things a lot.

It was funny how we could identify Americans like *snap* and they all wondered how we do it. We said it's their heavy accent. And then come the denial. "We don't have an accent! YOU have an accent!"

๐Ÿ‘: 0 โฉ: 1

nobodyelseXV In reply to Ophelion [2011-11-04 00:27:06 +0000 UTC]

bogan huh, i like the sound of that (lol) either way i like the sound of your accent (lol)
i kinda have wanted to go to Australia, im not sure for what yet, i kinda figured compared to the climate of a northeast lakeside state, i might die over there...

and yea that sounds about right about us ^ ^

Oh my... o_o I love it. The colours and his expression while kissing the rosary. But it's not the only thing I've enjoyed about this, your description of what you felt when you were in Spain really impressed me. I don't know. I'm so used to this, since is where I've been born, I don't notice this kind of things but when other people explains how amazed they were when they visited the country it's really curious and nice ouo

I hope you can make it to WYD-Rio in two years' time!

Goodness. You capture the mood perfectly. Especially with the colors and Spain's BFA right there. Conquistadors, anyone?

I'd imagine this is the conquistador some time after his heydays, specifically after one of his traumatic defeats... trying to go for the painful mood here.

Thanks for liking!
