Description Lineart here and details here .

M.A.D., short for Mutual Assured Destruction , as the chat went between the USA and the USSR during the Cold War . Such an interesting concept, that.

The war has always both amused and fascinated me, because on the one hand it was a time of very very high tension, when both nations were more than a little bit off-kilter; on the other it was a period of great advances in science, technology, engineering, communication, space exploration and so on, thanks to the crazy arms-races.

And then on the third hand it was somewhat like a pissing contest.

Anyway, Russia is dressed in the Red Army Kapitan uniform (such an awesome uniform; one of the reasons I HAD to draw this), while America is dressed respectively in the US Army Captain uniform (which is actually his canonic outfit, he just doesn't wear it properly); both sets are of the late-WWII era. The guns from left to right are: the PKM, the Colt AR-15 Sporter SP1 Carbine, the AK-47, and the M240 (which weighs 12.5kg; sheesh Alfred). Gosh I hope I haven't butchered anything...

... But I do love how the PKM turned out.

This is the longest-running project I've done since I left High School. I started this maybe three and a half weeks ago? The research, collating and drawing references took me over a week, and that's before I even started sketching the actual thing... and all for some non-sexual Cold War Hetalia fanart. Seriously, I can't figure out how the Cold War can be kinky. It's quite literally those two showing off their guns and saying "mine is bigger than yours". No pun intended.

Felt-tip on paper and mouse-work on PhotoShop (the guns are so friggin' large I had to draw Russia and America on two separate sheets and then put them together on PS). I've used a different way to colour this in compared to my previous three mouse-coloured pics . Background is made with various images scabbed from Google. I have their references if anyone wants them. Though I think it's safe to say that I won't be drawing BFGs in a while.

By the way, happy 2011 ebibodeh!

Axis Powers Hetalia, Russia/Ivan Braginski and America/Alfred F. Jones belong to Himaruya Hidekaz.

More Hetalia stuff here .

Nice pic! I love the details! Quick subtitle for where there aiming, "America, in order for it to be affective you first have to have a heart; Russia he first has to have a brain" LOL, didn't mean anything against either country, just funny stereotypes!!!

I have personally taken apart an M:16 and put one back together I have never seen a more accurately done rendition of one outside of military manuals. The AK is really well done to.

America's uniform is spectacularly done. There's one very similar to it sitting in my uncles basement and I can say with accuracy you even got the creases right, though I'm not sure about the boots. That piss cutter (garrison cap?) is well fit and realistic, way better than the one he occasionally wears in the anime. I don’t know much about Russia’s uniform, but it looks spectacular!

I love the whole mood of the piece, how Alfred's face is half thrilled half itching to pull that trigger and Ivan vaguely insane, perfectly, vaguely insane. Sort of like the whole cold war in general, though as far as history goes, it was rather straightforward. Beautiful, beautiful, beautiful.

PHEW! Thanks for that, that was seriously high praise... For all of it - the guns and uniforms, I had to go off photographic references that I managed to google. The research and reference-hunting alone took about a week, and then the drafting, reference drawing and sketching took another week and a half or so. But now I know it's worth it, if only for the sake of historical accuracy!

Yeah, America's boots, I took some liberty on that. One is because people NEVER have the references for footwear when it comes to military uniforms. Two is because I'm a sucker for drawing detailed footwear.

But I'm so glad that at least some of this resembles the real thing! Thanks a heap!

The boots are a little too tall, I actually am looking at a pair of Vietnam era ones right now, but it’s an amazing piece besides the height, the seams and fixings are very, very accurate.

You did an excellent job. I'm going to look at more of your art now because I am really impressed!

You're very welcome. It’s just so rare to see such phenomenal Hetalia art, especially one, such as yours, that has been so well thought out and researched. It’s shameful and sometimes disrespectful to history that more people don't put the care that you do into their art.

Keep it up!

Oh gosh, the detail on the artillery is amazing!! I've drawn just one gun like the PKM and M240 there, and it was NOT FUN. I haven't gotten my lazy arse around to coloring it yet either x'D

Great job all around, and bonus points for historical reference! (as I see most of your artwork contains! )

I thought the Cold War isn't the Cold War without Al and Ivan trying to out-size one another with their guns. No pun intended. It WAS pretty painful, though. I drew the guns in full detail three times: once for the reference drafts, once for the sketch, and once more for the lineart.

As for the historical aspect, I don't think I can help it. I was gonna do something for fun and stuff and then ended up reading up info on Vinland. Hopeless.

Chikyuu-Chan [2011-01-18 23:33:15 +0000 UTC]

Excellent work. Great attention to detail on the guns, and clothing. I like how Russia has his pointed at America's brain, while America's is pointed at Russia's heart, instead. A subtle detail that works well. And their expressions say clearly their motives, and speak volumes, America's "never say die" determination with Russia's cold, almost aloof, amused, you could say, look.

The only problem I have is to do with Russia's height. In cannon, Russia is 5cm taller than him, but that's all I would have to say. Just a minor detail, but apart from that, I like it alot.

Ah... Let's see, let's see.

Where to begin. Well, I'll start... hmn... Well, first. You have an epic eye for detail, and a patience that goes beyond words, really. The sheer fact you spend AGES on each of those guns, the uniforms the research, DRAWING THEM SEPARATELY THEN PASTING THEM TOGETHER. It all speaks EONS of extreme patience. I'm rather jealous of those sorts of people. My impatience leads me to draw pictures of snorting Canadians.

I always will like your want to be historically accurate. It brings an awesome feel. And it's ACCURATE. I'm tired of seeing Russia/America sloppy-goosh-blah pictures of them 'fighting' wearing WWII stuff. WAT. That isn't. RIGHT. Nuuuu. But you managed to get a nice air of realism to the pic and kept it epically Hetalia! AND NO RUSSIA/AMERICA. YAY.

The guns. Ye gads. The guns. While they all are in profile view, the attention to detail is awesome. Those... tiny... rivets. And seriously Alfred? Do you need a gun that big? Do you? Do you REALLY need guns that bi -- Nevermind. You're in a pissing contest with Ivan. OF COURSE YOU DO.

I love Alfred's hat.

The background is appropriate and heavily desaturated from the subjects. I kinda like that. It draws them in but doesn't make it a BLAH BLAND background... LIKE MOST OF MINE! YAY! I also want your ability to draw legs. Seriously. And arms. STUPID LIMBS. WHY ARE YOU SO HAAAARRRD By the way, your boot-laces ability makes me want to draw MORE BOOTS. Gads. I dunno who I like better.

I actually LOVE Russia's body-shape in this. Probably due to the design of the uniform, but I love the way the pants work with the boots. The silhouette is pleasing to me. Alfred's is just so... American.

ANYWAY.

Brilliant composition. Nice rich colours. The guns are epic-awesome. Of course.

I also like their expressions. Something seems sort of... childlike with Russia, just vaugely, and Alfred has that SPECIAL kind of evil face reserved for IVAN.

GAH COMMENT IS SO LONG.

... I love these pictures! So awesome, eh?

I am jealous of your patience.

Alright, let's see this. (I got home SO late last night, so I couldn't comment! D8 BUT here it is is now! Whee! *is shot*)

...and I know you -can- shoot me because you draw mad guns. Crazy.

I already pointed this out to you, but my favourite part of this one is the background. It's very well done, and the fact that it's muted grey instead of any other colour makes it so much darker. Like cold England afternoons, etc.

Also, I like the bomb mushroom because I suck.

I don't know what else to be said, but I realise that Russia's guns match his clothes, and US's match his, too! Russia's all woody and brown, and in contrast, US's are so shiny, metallic, and black. They all look bloody deadly, though. Wouldn't want to get on their wrong sides.

I still think US looks psychotic. I stand by what I say. I'd be terrified of waking up next to him, standing over me, looking like -that-. I'd likely pass out from fright and die of a heart attack there and then. Yeesh.

Good job on the colouring, again, though. Shiny boots. Really, -really- shiny boots. Thanks for sharing! (And no, I refuse to get into Hetalia)

I THINK by official profiles America's no more than an inch or two inch shorter than Russia, and I made him stand a bit more upright than Russia here. Both canon and fanon tend to exaggerate height differences though.

Thanks for the comment!
