Description This is the first portrait I've painted from photograph (which I found, as per usual, in an old Nat Geo magazine.) To be honest I'm happy with it as a painting but it's probably one of my worse portraits. Oh well, c'est la vie.

acrylics on canvas, waaaay too many hours. Like twenty.

You have to be kidding me! That is an awesome picture!
Wish I could be only half as talented and I'd be the happiest person in the world.

Why thank you I appreciate that. (I only meant it doesn't resemble the original as much as I'd like. But...maybe I'm too hard on myself.)

I do not know if I should say this. Because I do not wish in any way to detract from your work. I cannot see her whole dress and so I am not sure, but she appears to be adorned in the folk dress of women in my Country, I think this is a dress from Patmos or Skyros. When I was living there I was part of the Church Dance troupe. We wore dresses that were of the style from my home, of Roumlouki Macedonia, I am actually from Thessaloniki, but here is a link if you are interested in looking.

but anyway I am so homesick now. (do not feel bad everything makes me homesick). I have some photos of myself in the dresses. Maybe sometime I can email them to you as I am too scared to put up here.

Gosh you are so talented. Truly you are. And this makes me so happy. Truly. If it is OK, I am going to show the women in my Church. They will love this. (My luck this is not even a Greek girl. And she is from eastern Europe instead, but it would not matter I still think its wonderful)

I know this is an old comment, but I felt like answering anyway. I'm Romanian myself, and I can assure you her costume really is Romanian. People from Eastern and South-Eastern Europe share a lot of cultural similarities, especially when it comes to food and folk dresses. Sure, we still have different identities; looking at the costume on the website you linked to, and I can say for sure it's not Romanian, despite some similarities. For instance, we don't have those large golden pieces of jewelry (some Romanian costumes do have the coin strings, but usually around the neck, never on the head).

Well, I hope this helped! I really like learning about the countries in this area, because we're all similar yet different, too.

Thank you so much. It is so neat to know more truly. It reminded me so much of home is all. But I have lived away for a long time. But you are right it is so fun to know about the differences, and also the similarities. Bright blessings

This doesn't detract from my work, how could it? Thank you so much for your lovely words!
I'm sorry it made you homesick (again). I'm not as homesick as you are but I miss the places I have lived. I guess homesickness is just part of life. And it's better than having nowhere worth missing, right?
Anyway I am sorry to say that she is Romanian, not Greek, but feel free to show it to anybody you like. And if you would ever like to send me those pictures, I would love to see them. The dress in the link is beautiful!

Oh well. I feared I would get her country of origin incorrect. Many of the republics to the north of Greece have very similar folk dress. But it still makes me yearn for home.
