Description So for now I've decided to name this Celtic warrior I've been drawing Fionn. It's a bit too Irish-sounding, considering the fact that Fionn is supposed to be a British Celt, but oh well. Can't think of anything else right now. Here Fionn surveys the field of battle after fighting the Romans. Was it a victory for Britannia or Rome? I haven't decided yet. I tried to capture that thousand-yard stare, as it were.

Yes, I know he looks rather unblemished, I'll add blood and scuffle when I color it.

Is there a backstory for this character? Also, he looks kind of young, like sixteen to eighteen years old. was this intentional?

I do in fact have a bit of a backstory for him. He's supposed to be about 17 to 20 years old. In the story in my mind this is him after hisvery first battle, an experience that was both exhilirating and terrifying. Now he looks over the field of carnage, victorious, but forced to see the suffering of the dying.

I'm curious about the Celtic Dress Sense.

This Young Man for instance, is Shirtless, and from what I can tell is wearing a Kilt. Did they only wear Shirts and Trousers in the Winter? And What kind of Footwear did they have, like Boots, Sandals, Barefoot, or would it also be a seasonal thing.

I already know that they went into Battle Nude, I'm just wondering about the rest of the time.

Also, the Body Paints, are they only decorative, like for Battle and Ceremonies, or are they Permanent like Tattoos?

Again, we have very little to go off other than records by Romans, who were their enemies. From their descriptions and archaeological evidence like grave sites, it seems Celts wore trousers and things similar to the Roman skirts worn by men in the empire. Women wore long dresses. Footwear seems to be similar to early medieval footwear--leather moccasin type shoes, short boots, and there were sandals as well. Peasants everywhere who did not have shoes went barefoot.

As for the tattoos, it is my impression that they were semi permanent. The wide range of dyes available to the Celts meant the skin could be colored for long stretches of time. However, to my knowledge no tattooed bodies have been found in Ireland, Wales, Scotland or Britain, and those are the Celts I tend to focus on portraying. We don't know yet if those people were permanently tattooed or only painted for battle. So I took creative license and thought this British Celt might be painted like his Gallic contemporaries.

There have actually been some tattooed bodies found in bogs in Britain, but as these were clearly ritual sacrifices it is unclear whether the tattooes were something that people normally wore or something they only did for the ritual.Β

Thats very close to how I see ancient celts, thought other representations are more toned down and more clothed, I think they were an amazingly artistic and detailed people, and this image does them justice.

Thank you, this comment means a lot to me. It is impossible to truly capture the essence of a lost civilization, but I try get as close as I can when I draw them.
