Description This is a little birthday pic for !

Okay, I realize this is a bit more elaborate than I usually do for birthday pieces, but this is also a long-overdue thank you gift for a good friend. Sandra has been one of my biggest supporters on DA and given me more gift art than I can count! She even used part of my name for her new breed, the #Kathandra (which I feel just awful that I haven't had more time to support yet! ) This is her lovely mare, Rennes, who I just adore.

You may recognize this lineart from a collab I did with Sandra last summer of Rennes and Ellis. Since she didn't upload the piece to her new account, I thought it would be nice to paint a scene for her featuring Rennes. (Plus, I just love this lineart and will never be able to envision it as any character other than Rennes. ) I wanted to try out some new things with this piece including painterly-style shading and a different grass technique. (The last time I attempted painterly shading on an equine was over a year ago! ) This piece took a while, but I learned a lot, so it was definitely time well spent.

Happy Birthday, Sandra! (And thanks for being an amazing friend! ) I hope you have a wonderful day!

-Wacom Intuos 4, SAI (grass and lineart), & Photoshop CS5 (everything else)
-Rennes referenced from [link] by *Colourize-Stock
-Butterfly brushes [link] (with a good bit of modifying for variation) by ~redheadstock . (I will note that I don't usually use pre-made brushes as they make me feel like a cheater, but I was rather short on time and quite impressed by the quality of these little butterflies! )
-Everything else painted by hand

Rennes is (c) *Sandraa-a . Art is (c) me, Kathryn Powers. Please do not use my work without my permission. Thank you!

Thank you dear! (And for the fave as always! ) I'm glad you like the shading--it was fun to try something new! (Now, if only it didn't take so long... )

D'awww, thank you so much! (And for the fave as always! ) I'm glad you like the shading! That means a lot coming from a super-skilled artist like you! (And you know I just ADORE how you paint horses! )

Haha, I actually just kind of slapped the clouds down! You use Photoshop, right? Try the chalk brush and the blender brush everyone seems to love on DA (I think it's the one you already use), and I actually put all the cloud colors on different levels so I can adjust the opacity for more depth. Now that you have my cloud skills, you give me your mane and coat painting skills!

Thanks for the lovely comment, dear!

I thought you used Photoshop! Let me know how that technique works for you--the chalk brush is my new favorite brush in the program! Haha, you're a busy gal, so no worries! I bet there are lots of people who would love to see your techniques, though! (Of course, myself included! ) Thanks again!

Wow, I really love the serenity in this The atmosphere here is so relaxing The grass has a nice flow and it really matches up well with the horse's mane and tail The flowers and the butterflies add some nice coloring without being overbearing

Thank you so much! (And for the fave, too! ) I'm so happy you like the peaceful nature of this piece, and I'm glad you like how the colors turned out, too! I played around with the butterfly colors a lot so they wouldn't be an eye-sore, and I actually adjusted the grass color at the end so it matched her mane better! (How funny that you noticed both of those things! ) Thanks for the lovely comment!

D'aww, thank you! (And for the fave as always! ) I'm glad you like the shading--it's been a looooong time since I tried a more painterly-style like this. She totally reminds me of mint and chocolate, too! (Or a really dark strawberry! ) I do love her colors, and it was fun to paint such a unique color-combination! Thanks for the lovely comment!

you're most welcome, and you'll always have my support

i know the feeling, even if we are feeling a little "rusty", sometimes we can be really surprised with our own results, and that's one good thing about spending sometime without trying on some particular techniques...
mint and chocolate is pure love! and strawberries aswell

it's okay!

You are very very VERY welcome, my dear! It was the least I could do for all the lovely art you've given me since we met. I've wanted to make you a nice gift for a long time now, and your birthday was the perfect time to do so!

I'm so happy you like it! (See? I told you I had something up my sleeves! ) I did modify the lineart--I thought you'd notice! I tweaked it a bit to make it prettier. (Rennes is such a lovely mare--she deserved the best lineart out there!) I'm very glad you like my shading experiment, too! I had no idea how she'd turn out...but I rather like this painterly style! Ooh--and I'm also glad you like the stones on her tail thingy! I thought the emeralds would look lovely with her hair.

I hope you had an awesome birthday! Thanks for being a great friend! I'm so glad I met you on DA!
